Open gifts at reception?

My mom's side of the family thinks I should open the gifts I get at the wedding reception but I feel that's awkward and make the reception feel like a birthday party. Is it rude to open them? Is it rude to not?

Megan - pls dont listen to your fam on this one.....if i was a guest and seen you doing this i would think omg...how rude...couldnt wait to get into your gifts?? LOL sorry but being truthful.....most people bring cash to weddings in a card....if someone wants to be present when you are opening a gift then they should give it to you at a bridal shower

DON'T! Who wants to watch you open presents? People want to party. I also think it's rude. Don't make your guests feel uncomfortable and that the gifts matter.

I agree. It would make me feel like that was all the couple cared about but like someone said that's what people did in the early 90's and before. My mom's side of the family hasn't had a wedding since then bc I am the youngest grandchild by a lot. Lol. Thanks!

This is a very old tradition. My grandmother was asking about this before my wedding and I told her I never heard of the gifts getting opened at the reception. She just laughed and said that's what they did back in her day. I didn't do it because I wanted to spend my reception dancing and mingling. Not opening gifts.

Yeah, definitely don't do this. We did ours the next day at my parents and then we opened a bunch more when we got back home since others had them shipped to our home, others dropped them off at my parents or were brought to the wedding.

I say don't open the gifts. Not sure if it's considered rude though... I am not sure how the guest would feel about having to sit through the gift opening. Especially is you're having a big wedding. I just don't feel its appropriate for the occasion.
