Open bar - excluding shots?

We are hosting an open bar for the duration of our reception. Is it appropriate to tell the bartenders that we do not want to allow shots at all?

Our venue does not allow shots, I think it's pretty common.

My venue only allows beer and wine. We'd have to go through some crazy hoops to serve any liquor (not uncommon here in the Bible Belt, I've found). I've seen shots at weddings and it was insane. I'd steer clear for sure!

Our venue doesn't allow shots - and I am so thankful for that!

I think it's more typical than you think. It was in our contract that the caterer will not serve shots.

My venue also doesn't allow shots, but considering the fact that PA has stricter alcohol laws than I'm used to in CA...I wasn't too surprised.

All in all, I agree. I feel like people don't need shots for a good time.

I think it's fine. Anyone asking for shots is trying to get hammered and end up drinking way too much and wasting liquor.

Most of my venues don't allow shots any more.

I've never been to one that prohibited it. ¡Interesante! How is that taken care of? Is there a sign or do the bartenders normally just inform the guests?

I was planning on saying no shots for my wedding, and glad to hear that the consensus is it's an okay thing to request. I'm getting married on St. Patrick's Day and I'm not 100% how my Irish family is going to behave (I'd like to think they'll be appropriate, but I could definitely see them slipping out of hand). I was going to just tell my venue that if you serve shots, I can't guarantee that nothing will get broken to encourage the bartenders to not take bribes.

The venue we have chosen doesn't have a liquor license, so we have to hire someone to come in. This particular business does not do shots. They *may* make a one-time exception for the bridal party only. These guys say they see more weddings than not go downhill fast with shots and refuse to do them. They are super serious and state in the contract that they will refuse to serve anyone who is seriously intoxicated. Since our venue is near a national park, and people forget that the national park is federal land, getting pulled for drunk driving in FEDERAL court is 100x worse than state court, I am totally ok with this! If people want to throw-down, they can do it after the reception. I may seriously cut someone for getting embarrassingly trashed at my wedding.....

We will be serving champagne and a selection of beer and wine.

Our bar package we're planning to book doesn't allow shots. This seemed to be the case with a large majority the venues/caterers I spoke.

I'm a little put off that the bartending company I want offers a service for deep chilling shots (it's extra so yeah, not paying for that). We're doing BYOB alcohol at a private residence but I'm definitely making it clear that a neat or on-the-rocks whiskey is okay, but under no circumstances is any other drink to be served without a mixer.

Whoops - sorry for the delay here. Thank you all for your valuable input! Our venue does not have restrictions since we are paying on consumption. I wouldn't be against someone ordering a nice whiskey on the rocks, but I'll have to see if I can get that specific with our venue. It's really just straight up shots that I don't want to deal with. Some of my friends from college love shots when they're together, but they end up getting super sloppy.

My venue doesn't allow shots. I think that's fairly standard and a good idea

Our venue doesn't allow shots but you can order a whiskey neat and that's a whiskey shot so.

ETA: we aren't offering top shelf liquor but you best believe I'm taking a shot of patron before FH and I make our grand entrance Smiley smile
