online wedding (money) registery........worth it or a scam?

Has anyone used a registry site to get money donations? I found one that only takes 1%. (wishing well) Are these sites worth it? Has anyone used wishing well or another option they suggest? I understand some think its tacky. I don't need an opinion on that thanks.

Oh well, you're going to a lot of opinions on it. They suck, and it's rude to ask your guests for money.

Yes, they are a scam. And you'd be basically scamming your guests, too.

We're older too and decided to set up a small registry on amazon to upgrade a few things- we also enjoy our personal bar and have told a number of closer friends they could buy THIER favorite spirit so we can have it for them when they come over- a couple my mom and dad know used one of the sites and didn't have a bad experience- it was fine to use- a lot of people do this otherwise the sites wouldn't exist- if I as a guest had a choice I'd give cash (or Visa card) in an envelope. I wouldn't give through a site.

Scam or not, it's rude as shit. Adults have been putting money in envelopes for years and it's no secret that it's always welcome. And that way, you get every dime. Put a cash registry on your list? I"m out looking for avocado green electric skillets.

So....you KNOW it's tacky, but you're thinking of doing it anyway?

    Brilliant idea.

She specifically asked for no opinions on tackiness, but I see that people couldn't resist.

My opinion: any honeyfund site is a bad idea. They are tacky and in poor taste.

    An oldie but a goodie...

    "How can I kill grandma?"

    "You shouldn't kill grandma"

    "I didn't ask that and I don't care; should I use a handgun or a kitchen knife"

You can't tell me how to post, unless you're the CG's.

    Are you? No, okay then.

Asking for cash in any way is TACKY.

Don't register or make a small registry, if you're having a shower (hosted by someone other than you/FH/FW). When people don't see registries they will get the hint what you're looking for is cash/checks/gift cards.

Hannah, why do you believe your guests can't figure out how to put cash or a check in an envelope themselves if they wish to give money? Why would they need this website to "help" them do this and take 1% of their gift? If you think about it, it makes no sense at all. People KNOW how to give money at a wedding.

I didn't say anything about tacky in my previous comment, but those sites are a ripoff. Cut out the middle man who is basically taking you/your guests money for no good reason and have a small (Maybe just a few upgrades, like really nice towels or really nice pillows) or no registry. I think most people being cash in a card to weddings anyway. Presents are mostly brought to showers, so don't have a shower or registry, and you'll get all cash.

Unfortunately, OP, this is a HOT topic on this forum and the people here are going to tell you it's tacky regardless of your question. If you want to find more people who have used these sites, look into Facebook wedding groups and ask there. I see tons of people asking about them on my groups with lots of successful answers.

While I'm not using one myself, I was looking for one that would let my guests "build a house" and purchase things like windows, a door, whatever for the house we are actually building. I even tried building a tool myself on our wedding website, but in the end, I realized it wasn't worth the hassle.

A lot of older guests would have had no idea what the hell it was and I assume the same thing would go for honeyfunds or other cash things. Plus, any system you go through (like even PayPal) would take a percentage of the money your guests give, which I wasn't cool with.

I decided to go with a very small registry of things like paint cans, thermostats, and outlets for the house instead and let my guests get the hint that money would be most appreciated Smiley smile

If you don't need any physical gifts and there really isn't anything you want to upgrade, just don't do a registry- when people ask where you're registered, you can just let them know "we have everything we need for the house, so we didn't do one." And they'll probably give you money or a gift card- easy peasy!

I don't get this, these sites don't actually give you "experiences", they hand you a check for less money that you would have had than just getting cash from having a small registry/none at all. It literally makes no sense to have this kind of "fund".

I have lived with FH for 5 years and I have plenty of stuff we added for upgrades to our home.

If you know it's rude and tacky, why are you doing it? You clearly know the response these posts get, yet you chose to post in hopes that what? Someone would validate you and actually tell you to do it? How'd that workout for you OP?

Whether it is a cute poem, a pretty website, a bedazzled wishing well, or simply pinning money on people - it still seems like the purpose of the event is asking for money. If that is the goal, would say just cut to chase and sell tickets to the event.
