on site vs. off site hair & make up?

Cara, on July 20, 2017 at 10:58 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 32

I've been pricing around salons for hair & make up, and one of the more affordable salons that is in my area said their off site location fee is $200, even though we are down the block from them. I'm unwilling to pay $200 for them to come 4 minutes to us, so I am debating having everyone get hair and make up done at the actual salon. I kept envisioning the salon coming to us at the inn we will be staying in, and never really thought about going to them. This may sound stupid but the first thing I thought about was that our getting ready photos would be broken up since we are off site from everything. I've been looking at their gallery and really like the work they do and the price is right. Realistically I suppose it doesn't make a difference, but I was wondering other's opinions on having hair / make up done at your location, vs. you traveling to them? Pros & cons of each?

I ended up booking at a salon since coming to the house was more than double for not the trial and day of. Just not worth it for me. I'll travel the 5 minutes for $400 bucks in my pocket.

I'm going to a salon since it's just me , it will be nice to have some time to myself.

I found a salon that traveled free within 30 miles so i booked them, they only do hair. If i get my make up done i will just go to a palce nearby before i arrive at the venue since the bridesmaids arnt interested in having theirs done

I'm doing on-site since we are in the middle of nowhere. Luckily we have a full bridal cabin with a styling room, kitchen, full bath, etc. so there is plenty of space for everyone, including the HMUA.

Mine's coming to me but they don't have travel fees. Every wedding I've ever been in we've always gone to the salon. It's still fun, usually they have seats in the back or you just take over a corner of salon (if they even schedule anyone else during that time). We've always brought in snacks and mimosas still. I wouldn't stress about this.

I haven't booked my hair yet but I believe in going to just go to the salon. It's less than 10 minutes from me and will most likely be less than 100$ for hairstyle.

We are doing it at my moms house so everyone can be together plus I dont live near the wedding nor does my 2 BMs. We just thought it was easier to keep everyone together.

For my wedding the salon came to us. I've also been in weddings where we went to a salon. There are pros and cons to both, but I think the logistics are the most important consideration. For my wedding there were 8 of us so we would have had to take two cars and there would be a lot of sitting around/taking up space from my party in the salon. It was great to have everyone together and able to eat, drink coffee and mimosas, and just relax in the morning. However, the hairspray will leave a mess everywhere in your house/hotel. For one of the weddings I was in, there were 4 of us so we pretty much were all on a similar schedule. There was less socializing amongst us at that point, but we all finished around the same time and then staged getting ready pictures somewhere else.

If you want to save the travel fee, maybe you can go to the salon and then have all the girls come back to the inn with you and stage getting ready photos there. I loved having my salon come to me so I would probably just throw the money at it, but I think you can easily plan the morning so you can go to the salon instead.

I went to a salon, but it was just me and no BMs. I still have some getting ready photos of my mom helping me with my dress, but they are at the venue. I didn't really need any of my hair/makeup getting done.

The salon was super accommodating and even opened a little earlier just for me.

My stylist is within her travel distance so there is no extra fee. She will be coming to our hotel room, where we will be getting ready. Our venue is just down the road.

I would personally spend the $200 and have them come to you. The morning of the wedding was a zoo with everyone who needed hair and makeup done, and trying to get multiple people to another location wouldn't have worked out well for us. It was so nice to be able to snack in our pajamas, and obviously the photographer was there and got some cute pictures of us getting ready.

If it would've been just me, I'd go to the salon myself. The coordinating part is hard. How many people are getting their hair and makeup done?

I have noticed the fee. But i think I am just going to pay it.

I feel like I will be behind and not having to leave my house will be great.

$100 on site vs $175 on location. 20 minute drive from me. Bridal party is the same price

But $200 for 4 minutes is not worth it. I agree with you.

To me, $200 for 4 minutes is outrageous. Did you tell them upfront where you are? They might negotiate if they realize how close you actually are.

I wouldn't look at the travel fee as $200 for 4 minutes. They have to bring all their tools and supplies with them and they have to prepare to set their stations up outside of their normal area. Unless they're just showing up and you're providing all the curling irons, bobby pins, products, etc. don't look at it as a fee for just the distance they're traveling since there's a lot more that does go into it.

I would absolutely skip the fee and go to the salon. I don't think they are wrong for having that fee--as SLR pointed out, it's not really about the actual travel time, it's about having to pack everything up/work in a space that isn't customized to their needs/etc. But I definitely wouldn't be paying when the alternative is so simple.

I am having the hair and makeup people come to me at the venue, but there is no separate fee. For the two weddings I have been in previously we just went to the salon together. I don't feel like it took anything away from the experience.

I'm having them come to me. but my venue is in the middle of nowhere, and not really close to any salons. if we could go to the salon, that would be preferable, as i wouldn't have to pay the fee and we could all get done at once rather than sequentially.

There's no separate fee for the hair stylist to come to us. But if I lived down the block from a salon that charged a travel fee, I would save the $200 and just go to the salon.

Like a bunch of ladies said above, there is pros and cons about both.

I paid the extra $100 for them to travel to us. I have had my hair done only at a salon for weddings I have been in.. Don't get me wrong, it was fun. But there was a ton of waiting around and not being able to do much. Also check if they will have another bridal party in at that time or around that time. Twice the salon was double booked and super crazy and it took even longer.

We're going to a salon that morning/early afternoon. Doingoir makeup at my moms house. Not sure about the "getting ready" pictures, I feel like it would be weird for a photographer that I don't really know to come to my moms house with us?

I'm a stylist and think this traveling few is crazy! Do you have a bathroom that can easily be set up for got irons and tools? Can you have only the stylist plus maybe mother of the bride a photographer that can fit comfortably in that area? As a stylist I've found the inconvenience mostly at the extra people tryo g to cram into a small space as I'm working, I had friends and distant cousins trying to cram into the bathroom as I'm styling the bride trying to snap pics when the photographer was already doing her job as well so it does build frustration, even for the bride to be crammed i, a small space, but if you have a nice size bedroom with a vanity set up that might be nice. I'm still not sure if I'd pay the 200 for them to travel 4 mins maybe talk to them and of you have a nice space for them to work snap some pics and send them maybe they will work with you also maybe agreeing to limit who comes in while they are working. Hope this helps
