Officiants

How can you check to see if an officiant is legal? Do they have license numbers or is there a website with a list of names?

If they are truly ordained in your state, officiants should be able to readily supply a letter of good standing in their church. However, many states do not recognize some online churches. Your States Attorney's office should be able to help you out there.

In my state I not only had to be ordained but had to be approved by the courts. I have my certificate if any couple asks for it. Your officiant should be able to provide something similar.

You really need to look at your own state's law. A minister of an actual church (or comparable official of any non-Christian religion) is legal in every state. Judges are typically also authorized to perform marriages. But states vary widely on who else is permitted to officiate. For example, some states allow notaries, some allow people ordained online, some allow self-uniting marriages (no officiant at all required), some allow anyone (or in some instances, any resident of the state) to be authorized to perform marriages for a day, etc.

    Hey there, Katie!

As the PPs mentioned, your officiant should be able to provide you with a certficate.

What type of officiant have you booked that you're trying to verify?
