At our wedding we are offering choice of beer and wine and if someone wants hard liquor or a mixed drink it will be cash. We are on a tight budget as we are the ones paying for the wedding ourselves completely. I hear so much how cash bars are tacky and rude but in my opinion I think giving them beer or wine (on us) is at least acceptable. I've been to plenty of weddings were it was open bar at guests took way too full of advantage of that!

I know I personally don't go to a wedding with cash or a pocketbook for that matter. I am paying for my own wedding, got out of debt and bought a house all in the past 9 months. Pick up another job. I'm currently working 6. Unfourntaley there is no excuses.

We are doing consumption so maybe that's something you can talk to your venue about. You only pay for what they drink instead of 22.95$ (or whatever random price) a person. It's helped our budget a lot!

Beer and wine is totally fine. I personally drink wine to relax though, not to party so a signature drink would be nice. Your idea minus cash bar for alcohol (downstairs?!) is fine.
