Oahu?

Ruth, on October 25, 2019 at 12:06 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 11
My fiancé and I have decided to honeymoon in Oahu. we'll be going in the second week of December. Neither of us have ever been and he's never been much of a traveler. Any suggestions on where to go or what to do?

My FH and I will be doing our honeymoon in Oahu Dec 30-Jan 10 (coming up soon!!)

My FH is a huge surfer so we will be staying up on North Shore at Turtle Bay, as well as an airbnb on the beach (2 weeks is a bit expensive for Turtle Bay alone, so we split it up for a week in airbnb and a week at Turtle Bay). I know there are A LOT of beautiful airbnb's, so if you are looking to save some money definitely check that out!

I have not yet been so I can't give you much advice on what to do, but I have done a lot of research (especially on places to stay)

We went to the Stairway to Heaven and it was beautiful. We also really enjoyed Pearl Harbor.

I am from Oahu. I would recommend going to Kailua Beach, Polynesian Cultural Center, there are many hikes (don’t go to stairway to Heaven, it is illegal), Pearl Harbor, Hanauma Bay, Sea Life Park, Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens, there are many things to do.

Congratulations! We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon in July, 3 nights in Maui and 4 nights in Oahu. We stayed at the Four Seasons Ko Olina for 2 nights, and Turtle Bay for 2 nights. We really liked splitting our time up between the two sides of the island. We went to Kualoa Ranch and did an ATV tour, HIGHLY recommend! It was amazing & so fun. We did a snorkel & snuba tour that left from Ko Olina Marina, that was awesome and we saw so many fish & a few turtles. The brunch on the weekends at the Four Seasons is pricey but delicious.

Here is the link to my BAH, I posted more information & pictures there!

General advice for Hawaii: try to book a place that has a kitchen/ette because food is very expensive there and you will save money if you eat breakfasts/snacks (at least) "in" instead of "out." You will have sticker shock just going to the grocery store, but that will still save you money over eating in restaurants for every meal. Don't miss the farmer's markets for local produce!

A rental car is a necessity to do all of the things you want to do, so try bundling that with your flights or accommodations. Costco has great rental car rates (and is a good idea for gas and *some* groceries, too, in the islands).

That said, Oahu has probably the best public transit (buses) of any of the islands, so you might be able to use that if you stay in/near Honolulu.

Awesome, will you be learning to surf as well?

Airbnb definitely seems like the way to go for an overall good way to save.

    Congrats to you guys!!

Maybe! I already know a little bit of how to from when I lived down in Florida, but I'm not all that great.... So I don't think the big waves of North Shore will be a good time for me haha

I got engaged in Hawaii (on Oahu) a year ago tomorrow! My advice: Get a great place to stay with a basic or better kitchen. Food is expensive there. Groceries are, too, but still can save some money. If you like fish, the poke basically anywhere is great. Get malasadas at Leonard’s Bakery in Honolulu. Skip Waikiki or go to some of the shops. There’s other beaches near Waikiki that are beautiful and less crowded. We did a no-frills boat tour of the Honolulu harbor which was nice and not too expensive (unless you want frills - then more $$ and really cool options). Go to Lanikai Beach. We went on a kayaking and snorkeling tour in Kaneohe Bay. There’s a sandbar out there which is really cool and tons of great sea life. We also took an day to drive around the island to see different scenery. Stopped on the North Shore. You NEED a rental car if you plan to go around the island. You will LOVE IT!!

I loved hiking Diamond Head. If you're into fine dining, dinner at La Mer at Halekulani is a must 😍
