ny Wedding-cancel?!

Nelli, on January 7, 2021 at 12:38 PM Posted in New York Planning 0 7

Hi Everyone,

My wedding was scheduled in NYC for May 9, 2020, but due to the pandemic, I postponed it to May 8, 2021. I am sure, like many other brides, I thought by this year things would have looked very different. In NYC, currently, indoor dining isn't allowed, which is the only thing my venue is offering me because of the pandemic since they banned dancing at the venue for the time being. Unfortunately, hoping that things will get better by May is not practical and very frustrating. I am looking to request a refund but the contract states the deposit is non-refundable and the other monies are up to the venue to release.

Any couples in NY considering postponing or have successfully canceled and received a refund from their venue? Any advice others can offer would be appreciated!

Yes, I was able to get a full refund, but I cancelled one month before the mandates happened. We are now getting married outside with less than 10 guests.

Thanks for sharing! Was it easy for you to get a refund? Did your contract have any nonrefundable language?

While May feels very close, I'd try to hold off on any final decisions until February. Things can look very different in a few weeks.

That said, investigating a Plan B is not a bad idea, either.

If the contract says "non-refundable" ... you will not get a refund. I'm sorry.

Hi Nelli. No matter what you'll probably lose the non-refundable deposit (to hold the date), but you may be able to come to an agreement with your venue about the rest. I know it's stressful but you'll have more leverage closer to your wedding date if local restrictions are preventing your venue from upholding their end of the contract!

Here are a few other discussions you can check out where other couples have been trying to negotiate with their venues:

Edit: My fiance and I decided to cancel our wedding. The restrictions in NY have definitely made it difficult to plan the wedding. But also, my fiance is in the military and has had restrictions to travel 50mi from the base in GA since last year due to covid. We don't know when his restrictions will be lifted.
The vendors have some what been understanding. The make up artist refused to refund me or provide any future services for cancelling. One of our venues and the photographer has given us half our money back.
We are fighting for a full refund from the venue considering it is a city owned park. Not sure how far we can get with that. The other venue has been unresponsive and i am very worried! Still waiting to hear back from the DJ. Crossing fingers it goes well. Smiley smile

    Hi,

My wedding date is May 1,2021 so I feel your frustrations. Tomorrow is supposed to be our 100 day countdown but instead I’m anxiously counting down the weeks until the venue allows us to decide to postpone. I’m also from NYC getting married in NJ. My venue will NOT give a refund which was always their policy prior to covid for cancellations. They told us we can postpone but only when it is “our turn” meaning once they’re done rescheduling all of the brides for March and April (unless brides go forward with it with restrictions/ micro) we will get to choose a date. We were informed their are no Weekend dates available in 2021 and that most likely by the time we get to speak to them again in March, we will be looking at late 2022.
We are looking into still getting married if not on the date, the month or so after with immediate family. We still want what we planned the past 18 months for but we know chances may be slim to having anything close to “normal” until 2022. As for vendors, they are all willing to postpone. Some said they will give a full refund if we did need to cancel but that they would also work with us for a new date. It depends I guess. Definitely start calling and asking the “what if” question to get an understanding of what they’re willing to give back/ do to accommodate you. Unfortunately, not all vendors or venues are giving full refunds.
