Ny brides please help!

Kelly, on June 11, 2020 at 7:40 PM Posted in New York Planning 0 4
I was told by my moh that having someone officiating the wedding in ny is illegal if it was a friend who was ordained. She said i would have to get married in a court first and then the officiant does like “show” ceremony. Is this true?

Anyone can get ordained online - I know universal life church is a big one. There’s no reason that should be a problem.

You would have to research the laws where you live or call the county clerk’s office where you’re getting married. In some states, online ordinations for officiants are not recognized for marriages.

Not sure if you are in NYC or elsewhere but, per the NYC clerk website:

New York State Law requires any person who performs a Marriage Ceremony within the City of New York to register with the City Clerk. Registration is done in our Manhattan office located at 141 Worth Street, New York, NY 10013.

If you are planning to wed anywhere within the five boroughs of New York City, you should ask the person who is performing your Marriage Ceremony if they have registered.

The registration requirement does not apply to Marriage Ceremonies performed anywhere else in the State of New York.

We got married in NYC, by a friend, who is ordained and is a licensed officiant in NY.

Basically, they just need to fill out some paperwork.

But your MOH is wrong... and I've got the signed marriage license to prove it, if she'd like!
