What's enough for you to call in sick? Assuming you have a week or so of paid sick days, if otherwise, do note I've been feeling sickly for the last week - I think I'm overtired, dehydrated, stressed, and starting to come down with cold symptoms. Tempted to call out tomorrow, but I hate hate hate...

I've been feeling sickly for the last week - I think I'm overtired, dehydrated, stressed, and starting to come down with cold symptoms. Tempted to call out tomorrow, but I hate hate hate calling out with just a cold (esp when I don't even know if it's a cold or I'm just run down). Is that enough for you to call out, assuming nothing big is happening that day? Do you wait until you're dying? Do you ever call out just to take a day off?

I very rarely call in sick. It's hard for me to get a sub for my classes. Plus it's the family business so...guilt. This year I got 2 weeks (!!!!!) of vacation/sick time. I'll probably cash it in at the end of the year or during one of our closed times. I work with kids so get colds about 4 times a year but usually all the kids are sick at the same time too. I also suffer from migraines but one has to really kick my ass before I take off for it. I actually had a migraine last night and was feeling really "off" today so I left earlier than I normally would have so I could come home and veg on the couch.

If I do call out, I do it two hours before my start time, which means I call my boss in her cell at 5:30AM. I'll typically only do it if I feel like I'm going to die, or am in terrible pain. A few times I've gone in sick because I know we are ready short staffed and I don't want to compound the problem. However two weeks ago I called out just because I felt like it.

With my current job i don't feel as though I can call out sick. My boss requires a doctor's note, and threatens to reduce your hours if you can't produce a note. Thankfully I haven't gotten sick yet, but I feel as though there are times where you have a cold that would be a waste of a doctor's time, but where calling out sick should be allowed (particularly working in the food service industry).

I've been here almost 3 years and I called out once. I had a cold and my nose was SO STUFFY. I hate it when people come in the office and blow their nasty nose all day, so I stayed home. I have about 4 weeks of PTO saved up so if I know I'm not feeling it I'll just ask my boss for a day off rather than call out. Last year I broke my ankle and I was in the office with my leg propped up on an office chair. Both directors in my office told me to take a few days off but I didn't. Kept on truckin'. The only other time that I or FH have ever called out is when we had HAND FOOT MOUTH disease. Ew. That was disgusting and soooo painful! I missed a full week of work (at my old job) and FH missed I think 3 days. That's the only time that FH has ever called out in the 5 years we've been together. He is a workaholic.

I'm really lucky that I really enjoy my job AND we have an awesome PTO policy. I've been here for 4 years, and get 6 Sick Days, 4 Personal Days and 3 weeks of vacation, we can also carry over 5 vacation days from the year before. My boss always tells me to use my sick days for my last vacation week of the year so that I can make sure to always carry over to the next year, so I get 4 weeks of vacation. Hes Amazing.

I generally dont call out sick unless I physically cannot function at work. In July, i had a TERRIBLE sinus infection and could barely pick up my head from my pillow. Then FH & I got THE WORST stomach virus, I tried coming into work and got sent home in a car before 9am, I stayed home the rest of the week but worked from home 2 of those days. Aside from that I really haven't taken sick days, but my boss is always really open to when I need a mental health day or just a day off
