NWR When do you call in sick?

What's enough for you to call in sick? I've been feeling sickly for the last week - I think I'm overtired, dehydrated, stressed, and starting to come down with cold symptoms. Tempted to call out tomorrow, but I hate hate hate calling out with just a cold (esp when I don't even know if it's a cold or I'm just run down). Is that enough for you to call out, assuming nothing big is happening that day? Do you wait until you're dying? Do you ever call out just to take a day off?

I used to call off at my last job, or work from home, alllll the time. Man, I hated that place. I get 5 sick days, 1 floating holiday, and 10 vacation days each year at my current job and I have used I think less than 16 hours. It's a lump system, so my sick days can turn into personal days if I run out of my annual 80 hours of vaycay.

The only time I've called off in 15 months at this job was when our A/C broke and it was so unbearably hot in my apartment I didn't sleep all night. My boss didn't even deduct a sick day; she just let me stay home.

I used to basically have to be puking blood to be able to call in sick (not per me.....per the places I've worked). I've asked to leave due to awful migraines, and old jobs basically said that if I left without getting my shift covered, don't come back. Plus they required Drs notes (sorry, but I'm not paying $200 to go t a Dr for them to say I have the flu. I know the flu). Ugh.

But NOW! I have a great job that understands that I'm a person. I still won't call in sick unless I absolutely cannot go to work. In general, if I can't safely drive there, I'm too sick to go. I won't wait until deaths door, but I'm usually either healthy or down and out. There's few in between!

I love my job so I don't miss many days unless they are planned. I also don't get sick very often either. The last time I called in sick was when I was having period cramps and I couldn't sleep without taking medicine and a heating pad on.

Never. I currently have 3+ weeks of sick time built up. This year I have used 3hrs. I get a bonus week of vacation if I don't use my sick time, so I push through as much as possible. Since I used the 3hrs, I will only be getting 4 days instead of 5. I do, however, get 6 personal days and a floating holiday every year. I use those up first before touching other time.

I very rarely call in sick- more often than not I have gone in when I really shouldn't have, and have either been absolutely miserable the whole time I toughed it out, or I've been sent home (once for an allergic reaction, and a couple times after having seizures).

The only time I ever call in sick is if I have the flu and I'm too achy to move, and so nauseous that I'm either throwing up every few minutes, or hospitalized because it's that intense (often the case).

I call out of work last minute only when I am really sick and know I won't be able to focus on work at all. I love my job too much to call out last minute. I request off if I want a day off and never had a problem with that.

*whispers* I'm so envious of you guys who love your jobs that much that you don't want to call out.

I rarely call out, just because my kids need me- I'm a teacher-. And because the other teachers in my room are so very unreliable, so I feel like I need to be a constant in the room. I've called out here and there. If I throw up at work, I'll leave. I got really sick last January and missed an entire week of work-thanks Orbital Cellulitus, who knew adults could get that?!

I'm 26 and have only ever called out once! I had put my two weeks in at my retail job [for my recent new big girl job ..finally] and called out like 5ish days before my last day because I had never called out and my husband had the same day off and I wanted to. Mature? No. Worth it? Yes.

The nice thing about practically never calling out is that my sick/vacation hours were cashed out to me so my husband and I when out to a nice "F-U-Old-Retail-Job" dinner and stashed the rest towards our savings Smiley smile

We have a "if you're sick we believe you" policy so unless someone takes advantage of that, there's no real amount of days to take. I only take it if I'm really sick and usually do it the morning of or night before.

I stay home for major sniffles, sneezing, coughing, etc. As others have said, fever or no, I'm still probably contagious, and no one else wants to feel as crappy as I do!

DH, on the other hand, almost NEVER calls in sick, and will say, "What, you're calling in sick?!" Now That I am in private practice, so only work 3-4 hours in a day, I usually just take medication and suck it up. I barely touch my clients, aside from a handshake 'hello' and 'goodbye', so I figure, as long as I wash my hands well, I shouldn't get them sick.

At my current job, everything comes out of one pot so I only call out if I have a fever. At jobs where I have unlimited sick days I would call out once a year or so for a mental health day. I work in an office so no one really had to cover for me. I'd just have a little more work to come back to.

I can telework so if it is minor (cold, IBS flare) I just telework. I only call in sick if I cannot function or am contagious - flu, fever, migraine. I don't take "mental health days" or anything like that because I think it's shitty and unprofessional to leave coworkers in the lurch like that. If I need a break, I just plan a few days ahead.

I have never had a job where calling in sick was an option. since getting into my career i missed work once with the flu i got from a coworker (it was going around the office) and even then I went to work, then had a manager tell me to leave and dont come back until monday (this was early on a wednesday). what sucked the most was I was feeling better by Friday night and couldn't dare show my face at the office christmas party and missed all the fun and free drinks & food. I guess if I got sick at my current job it would be pretty much the same, i would go in and hope i am outwardly sick enough to be told to leave.

I manage a 7 eleven while I go to school, and I dont get paid for days I dont work. I try not to call off because in my situation it also causes someone else to lose a day off, which is never fun. Usually when I call off it is because of migraines( I get them during my time of the month) or its really serious. Last year I took off about three weeks because I was just always sick to my stomach with digestive issues. My boss was great about it so was fh. but since then i havent really had to call off.

At my old job, I worked for 2 years and didn't take any sick days. It all came out of the same pool and I would rather have the time for vacations, so I went to work even when contagious. The same thing with weather--if the office was open, I was there, even if no one else was and I had to drive through 6 or 8 inches of snow to get there.

Most recently, I missed part of a "mandatory" training because I had a fever of 101 the night before and an ear infection. I attended for the afternoon, after I went to the doctor and the pharmacy.

I only call out for myself if I have a fever. However, if DH or my boys are "sick" I will definitely call out.
