I had a phone interview this past Tuesday followed by an in-person interview yesterday (Friday). They called me 2 hours after the in-person interview to invite me for a third interview at the main office to meet with the position's immediate supervisor and the program's top director.

I ended up chatting with the person whose position I would be filling for 10-15 minutes before my second interview, and then she was the one who called to invite me to the third interview. During that phone call, she said, word for word, "I don't want to tell you what to wear, but...." So I guess dress sharp?

I wore a black suit to the interview with a ruffly white blouse and low heels. Some of the same people will be there, so I want to wear a different blouse, but the black suit is the only one I own and I am woefully lacking in business attire (I've been working in e-commerce and pajamas are almost acceptable at my office.) Throw some ideas/links at me?

@bea22 Only the interview panel was present in the office. During the tour after the second interview, they showed me their own offices plus three empty offices; I'm not sure if they were absent because it was Friday or because it was during lunch hour or what.

I do not have any other slacks, but I'll be hunting for some this weekend. I very nearly bought a pair of grey Ivanka Trump slacks along with the blouse, but they were visibly damaged. I'll hit the thrift stores on Monday, and I'll check Dress Barn and Maurices tomorrow.

    @Mrs. Faith - Thanks!

Just change the top and maybe the shoes. No one will notice

I disagree with the advice that you don't need to wear a suit. It doesn't matter what others are wearing. ALWAYS wear a business suit to a business interview. Never go business casual. The top you picked will work great with your black suit.

I think the suit was great for the second interview. I think at this point, you need to demonstrate that you will fit in. Perhaps skip the jacket this time.

I wore my suit and a tan plain blouse on my first interview and I met with the president who was in jeans and a polo. On my second interview, I wore my same black suit and a bright teal blouse and met with the director and she was in a full skirt suit. I was glad that I didn't dress down based on what the first person I met with was wearing! The same suit and the blouse you bought is perfect! And i agree with others- don't roll the sleeves and tie it just like you had it in the fitting room. Good luck!

I'm wearing the aqua blouse with the black suit, and the interview is in one hour. All I can say is holy hell, I'm glad I'm not applying for a position at the main office. It took more than half an hour of circling to find a parking space four blocks away.

Good luck on the interview! I often wear business-y dresses to work events. I only wear suits/blazers to customer meetings.

Good luck! I'm in the PNW and also work in government. You should be totally fine with that outfit. I am sooo wondering who you are interviewing with. Is it downtown?n Don't worry, I don't expect you to name the agency. I've worked in two govt agencies, one in an office downtown and one in an office on the east side of down, close to a major shopping mall. Smiley smile

Ohhhh yes, parking around that area is awful! I'm on Oak, just a block over. But it sounds like you wouldn't be based in that office, which is good for transport/parking. When do you find out if you got it?

Presumably soon, since the director was looking at possible start dates based on my giving notice to my current employer today or tomorrow. No offer yet, but I think it went well.

Um. So. I have a start date, an appointment to sign new-employee papers, and a schedule for my first three weeks of work.

    I just don't have a formal offer.

Apparently, the reference checks for this position include a really long form asking really personal questions that most of my references can't/won't answer about me. They've asked me several times for more references and I've given them pretty much everyone I can think/get hold of. So my offer is pending sufficient reference responses to what my current employer termed "invasive and insulting" questions. (And he refused to answer any of them. Thanks, dude.)

Did you sign anything saying they could ask these questions? Legally there are few questions they can actually ask.

Don't get ahead of yourself. Same exact thing happened to me. Heck they even offered me the job, told me my salary, and said I should turn in my two weeks notice. Two days later they came back with some excuse that the references didn't quite fit what they were looking for. I was jobless for a few weeks due to already giving my job notice. Anyways, I really hope it goes better for you!!

Your current employer is within their legal right NOT to answer those questions. Do you know what they are asking and why?

I don't know *what* they're asking, but yes, I signed a reference release and they're asking more personal questions than most employers because I'll be working with vulnerable disabled clients. I know my current employer has no obligation to answer the questions, it's just kind of disappointing.

They did officially offer me the job this morning, but I hesitate to hand in my notice until I've signed my intake papers. But YAY I got it!
