NWR: Safelite repair made crack worse!

Megan, on September 25, 2013 at 1:47 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

So I just recently got a truck from my brother as a "gift" (96 chevy tahoe). There are a few things that needed to be done in order for it to go through inspection. One being fix 2 cracks in the windshield look like spider webs, about the size of a penny (each). I only have liability on the truck. I had safelite come out to repair the cracks. They got the first one fixed & when the lady went to go fix the 2nd one she made part of the crack a little bit longer. My husband was there and said the extra crack is so small he can't even get a picture of it to send it to me. There is form you have to sign saying if something goes wrong while safelite is repairing that they are not responsible for further damage. You don't sign, they don't repair. The lady told my husband to call my insurance and they should be able to cover getting a whole new windshield since it's safelite's fault. The lady said that is wasn't fixable (or something like that). Anyone deal with something like this? Cont...

Is the insurance part true? I've never had to make a claim with my insurance so I don't know what I'm doing LOL

I'm not sure about the insurance thing. For most people I know, unless you have glass coverage as part of your insurance, you'll have to pay for a whole new windshield. We (DH and I) don't have glass coverage since due to winter and the sanding of roads we always end up with chips and such in our windshields. I have a bunch and unless it effects the vision i.e. seeing straight out the window you don't have to have it repaired.

I would check with your insurance company though.

I'm pretty sure that's correct for most insurance. If the windshield had to be replaced to begin with it wouldn't be covered but because it was broken when you were trying to get it repaired it should be. They don't want to discourage you from getting small cracks fixed quickly.

If Safelite damaged it while they were doing a repair, they are responsible for fixing it fully, however you do need to make a claim with your insurance company. It's pretty much just like any other accident. Someone hits you, their insurance pays for it, but only if you've made a claim with your insurance first. It's a pain in the butt, but once the claim is there, you won't be coming out of pocket to pay for their mistake.

Likely with liability it won't be covered, they don't repair your car at all... Also they aren't responsible. The filler can make it expand or fix it... It's a fifty-fifty shot and the form you signed releases all liability they have.

Most likely this will be coming out of your pocket, sorry Smiley sad

Okay So I've talked to nationwide & safelite. I didn't know this but I don't have glass coverage on my insurance for the truck. There is a paper (when the crack was suppose to be fixed the first time) saying that if the repair is made worse by safelite while trying to fix a current repair then they aren't responsible for it. Basically any damage they do while trying to fix something they aren't responsible for. In order to have any repair done (I had 2 cracks) the paper has to be signed so I got one done. Safelite will be back at my house around 4:30/5:00 today to replace the entire windshield. It's not as expensive as I thought it would be & it comes with a national lifetime warranty as well. & Yes it is coming out of pocket. I told my husband this has got to be taken care of and there's nothing else we can do since the repair is not fixable.

Alot of times while trying to fix the cracks, etc this can happen so it's not not normal. It's an older truck too
