I realize this is non-wedding related, but the wedding wire community is always helpful at advice. My husband and I moved into a new house that was recently built. There is a basketball hoop placed 2 inches from our property line in front of our property where we would like to park. We live on a VERY steep slope in the back that leads to a very large creek. Before we moved in, the ball went onto our property and rolled all the way behind our house where it is very steep to climb down. The boy went down after his ball, falling numerous times, hanging onto our house for balance. This has happened a few times. It is very dangerous because of the slope. The owner of the hoop lives across the street and down a little bit. We have a small garage that we are using for storage and won't be parking in. We would like to park in front of the house where this hoop is, which we have been doing since we moved in... (continued in comments)

@KathleenS wow! that's awful. People can be horrible sometimes =( I always try to be considerate of other people-- just wish it was reciprocated.

The kid used to get so mad, too, when the builders were building and parking their trucks/ equipment there.

I had a feeling it was going to be an issue when they didn't move it while the house was being built.

So the hoop is actually not in front of your property but the house next door? But, being a cul de sac, parking is limited in front of your house? Is there a reason you can't park in your driveway if you don't want to use your garage?

I agree with those who say the kids running across your yard is a liability concern, and that is how I would address it with the city. Be clear about the layout of the houses and the hoop when you contact the city or it undermines your argument.

@Chip I would be afraid they would say we touched their property and damaged it or something crazy. I have a call into the city zoning officer. Hopefully I get some answers soon.

@muriel It is two inches from our property line and we don't have a lot of land so it is a few feet from directly in front of our house.

I would call the city and let them deal with the rude neighbor. They need to get used to a new normal now that you live on that property.

@Anne exactly. How would they feel if we just walked in their yard and in the back of their house whenever we felt like it?

Exactly, my DH would have none of that! We had new neighbors move in next door a few months ago, and their dog's rope was going like 10-15 feet on our property (allowing the dog to pee/poop on our side - also bit me once when I was taking out the garbage...) and DH went over to ask them if they could scoot the rope over. They were SO NICE and understanding about it, which is how your neighbor should be. It's just common decency.

I would see about a fence if it's all affordable. This really is a liability issue!

Do you have a driveway? The reason I ask is because it will help if you can see their point of view. They may see your parking on the street as a passive aggressive move on your part when your driveway is sitting empty.

Please understand that I agree that the hoop needs to be moved. Things have changed in the neighborhood since the hoop was placed in front of what was likely the empty lot at the end of the cul de sac.

Even if we do park in the driveway are we supposed to tell our guests they can't park under the hoop and park up the street?

If you're building a fence, invest in a survey to figure out exactly where the property lines are so nobody can accuse you of going onto someone else's property.

So while I'm not disagreeing with your POV, it probably wasn't the best idea for your husband to tell the kids they should move the hoop. I highly doubt they relayed the message the way he said that and many parents probably wouldn't like other adults telling their kids to do things like this rather than talking to them.

Do not ask your insurance company about it unless you want your rate to go up.

I'd call the town hall and I'm sure they can nip it in the bud

"Even if we do park in the driveway are we supposed to tell our guests they can't park under the hoop and park up the street?"

Of course your guests can park there. Padding an argument rarely works.

So you do have a driveway and choose not to use it? You must see how this comes across to your neighbors.

Stick to the real concern- the liability issue. Talk to the city and your neighbors.

Asking about coverage will make your rates go up?

I meant if we parked the car in the driveway and one in the street. We are still in the process of moving in so it is easier to park in the street and go through the front door. I'm not sure about rates going up if we just ask.

I like what bemyguest said! Put your car wherever you want and tell her to bug off. She keeps yelling call the cops for harassment
