NWR: Misuse of word "exponential".

MrsKruse, on March 3, 2017 at 12:27 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 54

Okay grammar and vocab nerds, this isn't even kind of wedding-related but I don't feel like posting this question to Facebook or anywhere else. Has anyone noticed people misusing the word "exponential" a lot lately? I notice people using it when they really just mean "significant" or "a lot". Thoughts?

Being a math teacher I hate when people say exponential in the wrong way.

I hadn't noticed that one. I'm still stuck on "isle" instead of "aisle" and "defiantly" instead of "definitely".

Yessss! I'm an English major and nothing grinds my gears more! My biggest pet peeve of a misused word is "irregardless." It's literally in the dictionary as "regardless" which is what they meant to say! Ugh! Phew that felt good! Lol.

The amount of people on this forum who misspell or misuse words is astonishing. I saw isle in stead of aisle yesterday @rachel and died lol

The one I see a lot that gets me is that apparently the word guest is singular and plural. "How much food for 125 guest?" GUESTS. There's an s. That makes it plural. Get with the program.

I get massively irritated when people refer to it as bustles rather than a bustle.

I haven't noticed that one specifically, but holding English and Communication degrees, I notice a LOT of general word misuse, abuse, and misspelling. Especially on WW.

I still don't like it when people say that something funny is "hysterical", even though they did add that definition in the dictionary.

The teacher in me cringes at word misuse. The math teacher in my laughs when they think they know what exponential means...

My pet peeve is people who say "I could care less," like really, could you?

I know my English teacher grandmother would roll over in her grave over some of the common mistakes people post, whether it is on here, Facebook, over email, etc. I know I'm probably guilty of making some mistakes, but I'm too much of a perfectionist to not correct them when I notice.

I've kind of given up on words because it's kind of a lost cause with people with people still using "isle" and "vowels"....but punctuation makes me insane.

I hate when people add an apostrophe before the s when things are plural and not possessive. Doing it with last names is my biggest pet peeve. It's the Smiths, not the Smith's. We have a neighbor who carved it the wrong way into concrete pillars at their driveway entrance and it makes me stabby every time I see it.

I've seen a lot of "purpose" instead of "propose" lately. So irritating.

I totally agree! I am forever correctly my kids on how to say things. On here as well as all social media you see it all the time.

@Jillian am I with you 100% that drives me insane. As well as "pacifically" instead of "specifically".

Defiantly instead of definitely is one that really gets me. I actually haven't heard anyone use exponential incorrectly.
