I use to sew back in high school a lot & I want to get back into it. I know there are alot of DIY ladies here so I thought I'd ask: Im looking to buy a used machine, for beginning to intermediate level. I use to sew on a singer, but other then that, I'm clueless about brands. Can anyone point me in...

    * In order to protect what little bit of manhood I have remaining - I use my machine strictly for sailing related functions. I'm not sitting down making clothes! Disclaimer off.

I have an Elna that I love. Check some of the smaller shops they often have good buys and when they sell used machines they stand by them. They will also take trade-ins if you decide to upgrade later on.

Whatever you decide sit down and try the machine - try a bunch of them. Keep in mind the types of fabric you will be sewing with. Some machines are great for cotton and "sturdy" fabrics, but eat lightweight and sheers.

I have a Singer Tradition. FH bought it on sale at Target for my bday. I love my cheap machine, except it doesnt like green thread.

Singer USED to be a great brand. I learned how to sew on my great-grandmother's 1930's Singer that would sew ANYTHING! However, as my mom was sewing my wedding gown, something in the bobbin case broke (because their parts aren't made out of metal anymore) and Singer doesn't just sell replacement parts anymore. Now I have a Singer, but once I get my teaching job I will definitely be buying a more expensive machine. So just make sure you save your receipt and know the return policy Smiley smile My mom got hers from Costco and they took hers back.
