NWR: Kitten sleeping through the night? HELP. I'm exhausted.

Swin., on July 20, 2016 at 4:01 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 37

So, DH and I brought home the cutest little kitten from the shelter yesterday. He's an 8 week old little orange tabby named Titus Andromedon. (Kimmy Schmidt, anyone?) He's great and really sweet but he's very attached to us. Whenever we leave the room, he cries. And, last night we decided to just try to have him sleep with us to minimize stress.

But, during the night he kept (playfully) biting DH. So, we put him in the bathroom (connected to our room), and shut the door, but he cried for an HOUR straight. And, DH had a work meeting extra early, so I ended up just making a little bed for myself and sleeping (well, kind of) in the bathtub with him so he'd stop crying.

It worked, but this is obviously not going to be continuous. I'm curious if any cat owners have any advice on either getting the kitty to actually sleep (and NOT bite) during the night, or a way to get him to stop crying when we aren't with him (as this is even a problem when we went to the gym last night)? Thanks!

Yep! All of our kitties started sleeping through the night on their own...around a year old.

Until then, scruff him when he misbehaves and be consistent.

Yup. Give it a year and then you'll have a solid sleeper.

Are you playing with him at night? Cats are crepuscular (hate the sound of that word!!), meaning they're super active at dawn and dusk. And kittens are just always going, going, going...

Play with him multiple times - like, hard play. My cat loves Da Bird or any string toy and lasers. Laser pointers were our saving grace when she was a kitten. 5-10 minutes of laser play about 3 times before bed would make her sleep nearly through the night.

Kittens are like babies, they wake up throughout the night, and get separation anxiety.

You just got him, give him time to get adjusted to his surroundings, as well as you. He's also still a baby, so leaving his litter mates and mother is another adjustment for him.

Some cats meow, we have one that meows for any reason she pleases.

    Good luck.

My cat is 5 and still cries when we lock him out of our room, or really even if i close the door to use the bathroom. I don't know how to break that habit - he's very vocal. We got him at 8 weeks old. He did start sleeping through the night after about a week. I think he just needed to get used to a schedule. As far as the biting, we got a squirt gun and he learned pretty quick.

A word of advice - do not feed him in the middle of the night, not even once. He will learn that if he misbehaves, his reward is food, and you will never break the habit.

Get into a routine! Feed, play till he's super exhausted, then he'll clean himself, then he's ready for bed. My cat learned that lights out plus snuggles equals go the fuck to sleep thanks to this routine. He only bugs us when he hears FH's alarm go off.

I think the most you can do it just wear him out with play right before it's time to go to bed. Eventually they'll get more on your schedule and sleep through the night with you. I would think the crying will stop sooner than the nighttime playfulness though once his surroundings aren't as unfamiliar as they are now. He probably just needs some time to gain some confidence that this is his place now! Do you have any pics of little Titus??

I second the squirt gun idea, we just bought a cheap spray bottle. When the kitten is being bad, a quick squirt will help. Both my cats slept really good as babies even day 1, so not much advice there, but give it a little time. The first few days are always scary and hard for a new pet.

We got our cat when she was 4, but we still went through this. It helped to do a LOT of playing right before bed. The ASPCA also recommended having quiet toys that only come out at bedtime, so she can entertain herself (quietly) with special toys that aren't available during the day. That didn't work so well for us, but it might for you?

Wow! Thank you guys so much for the responses. You all are great.

I think DH and I will head over to the store and pick up some quiet toys for him and work more on tiring him out before bed! Thanks again!

Also, I think orange tabbies are the sweetest of all cats - always have, always will. Every single one I've met has always loved to get pets and cuddle. I'm still trying to talk FH into getting another kitten so I can pick out an orange tabby...

Just don't tell my tuxedo kitty I said that... she might get jealous.

It also seriously fade with time. I have two cat babies - one 5, her brother is 4. She's very quiet but gets very vocal when moved to new surroundings for a few days (and when she's just throwing shade). However, Mr. Winston is a CRYER. I mean cries. A lot. Let your kitten adjust to his surroundings and you - it'll take a few days and plenty of patience. Then, cats actually can be trained. They can be taught to sit and awarded for quiet behavior. YouTube it!

I also included a photo of when we first moved into our house. They were scared and cried anytime they couldn't see me. Your kitten will adjust!

Ugh sounds like our cat. She's 1 and a half now and much better, but we used to have to put her in her carrier and move her far from our room because she would cry or scratch the door incessantly if we shut it, but if the door was open every single day around 5 am she either sit on my head and play with/bite my hair or play with anything she could find that makes noise. We still can't shut the door, but now she leaves us alone until an alarm goes off then she meows until we pet her. I felt so bad about putting her in the carrier, but it was usually only from 5-7.

We also use a squirt bottle when she's bad, but I think she's building up immunity to it because sometimes she just lets us spray her and continues doing whatever she wants.

My cat sits outside the door and cries when I go to the bathroom without him and he's 7. Worlds. Biggest. Baby. Getting two kittens might help it not feel so attached to you. Otherwise I say just let it sleep with you.

Yeah our cat is almost 3 (his name is Sulu) and he still doesn't sleep through the night. And he LOVES to attack feet, especially when they're in a bed, and for some reason, especially my FH's. Some cats just naturally have a higher energy level and some are just more vocal (mine talks to me continuously when I get home for work for at least a straight 10 minutes). Honestly, I've just gotten really used to his nighttime antics so unless he's trying to claw up the screen on the window, I just let him do his thing. While this is probably not the best approach if you're trying to actually teach your animal something, I tend to have an abundance of patience so it's just easier for me to just let Sulu be Sulu.

And I totally second the spray bottle tactic! We got one this summer to try to keep him from clawing at the screens so we could actually get some airflow into the apartment and it worked like a charm!

Also, Titus is frickin adorable, you're making me want another kitten! Smiley smile

Honestly, I would consider getting him a friend. They will wear each other out playing all day.

Oh, I forgot to address the crying...

My Runt (who is a pale yellow ticked tabby!) does this. He always has. He's 7.

If I shut him out of the room I'm in, he will cry for me until I come out or let him in. As in you can literally hear him crying across the house he is so loud. It is AWFUL! He is not neurotypical though, and has some issues: a brain injury at birth (mama cat, a rescue, slammed his head into the wall as he was being born,) Kleinfelter syndrome (XXY chromesomes,) and feline hyperesthesia syndrome, likely related to the brain injury. He is the sweetest cat known to man, and thinks that THE place to be is laying on my boobs like he did as a kitten. He is now a 25 pound cat! I love him to pieces though, and he is probably the sweetest, most affectionate, most loving cats I've ever had.
