NWR - Hot Rollers - What kind?

Carole M (a.k.a "old tart"), on July 18, 2011 at 5:15 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

Hi everyone, I have been reading reviews all day, and I am totally confused. Rollers have changed dramatically since I last used them. Do you use hot rollers? What kind? Also, what is better for hair, dry hot rollers or steam rollers?

Thanks in advance!

I don't use them but my aunt uses the steam rollers.

The big thing with the rollers is the picks that you use. I've had the kind that are like claw clips, and they leave really weird kinks in your hair. I'd suggest steam rollers with some sort of enclosed clip. Another good tip if you want a perfectly polished curl is to use a curling iron to get the ends nicely curled before you put the rollers in.

Carole ~ You have seen my hair, it goes all the way to my waist too!

and hot rollers don't work for me very long. What will hold ALL day for me is sleeping in sponge curlers the night before. Maybe something to consider????

And since you are doing a pony, you can even put the hair IN a pony and then put curlers in the hair and see how that turns out. Give it a trial and see.

Conair hot sticks, they're pink and purple and are very easy to use, and quick. my hair used to be to my waist, i'd wear them over night (although the package recommends not to) and my hair would stay curled for 2 days. put a touch of gel on each strand prior to rolling, that will help keep your curl (again, not sure if it's against the package directions).

Thanks ladies! I truly appreciate all the tips.

Leyila and Meghan...Funny, I was just looking at Caruso's steam rollers.

Hayley....I can't do a side pony any more because my collar is too high on my bolero. I am going with a half up and half down do. Funny you should mention sponge rollers. It is what I used in high school/college, but my hair was just below my shoulders then. I used to roll my hair dry and it did stay all day. Do you roll your hair dry or wet?

Holly P....Thank you! I will check them out.

I have a s set by Conair or maybe it's Revlon now that I think of it! I would spray a little bit of hairspray on each piece and then roll. My hair was a lot longer then so I would always roll my hair in a ponytail so it was easier. Mine have claw clamps and I usually don't get claw prints. I've heard great things about steam rollers but the added moisture would probably give me the frizzies.

Maybe try satin pillow rollers and a setting lotion/gel or mousse without any alcohol.

I've used conair hot rollers (they are my sisters) and I got to say they did not work nearly as well for me as sleeping in regular sponge rollers. My hair is the way that it will stay however it dries, so I've found doing sponge rollers in wet hair, then going to bed, works best. But i have itty bitty short hair, if I curled my hair now I'd look like shirly temple.

Of the two types of hot rollers it seems to me like the steam ones would work better.

I just tried sponge rollers and they were great! Normally I do hot rollers. Haven't tried the steam rollers yet.

Thanks ladies. I think I am going to try the "old fashioned" way. I will even buy "setting lotion".

Okay, so does anyone know a good hair spray?

I like Pantene hair spray or even dove. They aren't aresol or however you spell it. I like that they smell good and don't leave a very heavy "crisp" to the hair.

Thanks Bert's Girl. I actually think my daughter has some Pantene I can "borrow" for another hair trial.

I had long hair all through my teenage years and always curled my hair with sponge curlers or what my Nanny called "rag" curlers. We used to use something called Dippity Do as a setting gel. It was like a gel. I am not even sure if they still sell it but it worked great. Good luck!

I've found that when I use hot rollers, I get a nice soft curl/wave. When I use sponge rollers overnight in wet hair, I get tighter curls that hold much longer. But lately I have been getting wave/digital perms which dries as loose curls/waves without styling!

I used sponge rollers, it has been years since I have done that. I might just get a set and give it a try.

I roll it a little damp... with hair all the way to my waist, if I roll it right out of the shower it would take 24hrs to dry.

Ladies, Thanks for your input and thoughts. I appreciate it.

I just came back from the salon and had 2" taken off. I needed it. So, it is officially just below my bra strap. I also stopped in at Sally's Beauty Supply & bought Lotta Body Professional Setting lotion and a trial size of Ion Finishing spray. I have decided to do another trial this weekend.

Future Mrs. Seeders....I don't know if they still make it.

Future Mrs. Harris.....Thanks. Yes, I am going to try the sponge roller route.

    Christine....At Sally's, they are $2.59 for a dozen.

Hayley....When I rolled my hair, I used to do it totally dry. I am going to have to try damp. You are right, our hair takes 24 hours.

I would take an old hair spray bottle and put water in it... and just spritz it a little if it was dry... or wait until it was Almost dry to roll.

I have done a bun with damp hair and it is still wet at night 14 hrs later when I take it down... it is amazing how pretty it smells, keeps the shampoo scent.

Does your daughter have super long hair too???
