Hi all! So two Thursdays ago, I was offered a new job and accepted it. I put my two weeks in, and Friday is my last day. Hi all! So two Thursdays ago, I was offered a new job and accepted it. I put my two weeks in, and Friday is my last day. The new job required a drug test, and I did that last week, and never thought anything else about it. I've never done drugs, so had nothing to worry about. Well yesterday, I got an email from HR saying that my sample was 'negative - dilute,' and that I had to do another test by EOD today. If it comes back negative dilute again, I lose the job! Has anyone ever had this happen?! I'm freaking out about it. I drink water throughout the day at my desk, and I had no idea that that would make a drug test not be able to work! I'm eating a high protein breakfast with a soda.. Here's to hoping I'm not hydrated for this test!!

I have random drug tests for my job (in the navy) and I've never heard of this happening. Maybe all my coworkers are constantly dehydrated lol

Hi! I work in HR and I come across this from time to time. Negative dilute usually means that you just drank too much water (even if you didn't think you did) Each company has a different policy, I only recall one scenario where the 2nd test came up negative dilute for a candidate. But each person is different. Try to relax and take the test first thing in the morning if you can. Good luck!!

It happens if you drink too much fluid. It dilutes your urine. The same thing happened to me a few years ago. I just didn't drink as much water for a few hours and took the test and the next test was fine.

Try to do thr test first thing as you wake up when your urine is most concentrated

I drug test as part of my job or a living I would not normally recommend this but don't drink so much water the day of test. It means that your specific gravity was less than 1.005 they should have ran a Creatine level to make sure that it was actual urine but it does make it look like you're trying to hide something when it's that low so I would just suggest that trying not to drink that much water for the day would help.

FH works as a probation of case worker and administers court ordered drug tests-- many people (not you) who are positive will try to drink high quantities to dilute or cheat the test or drink cleansing drinks.

ETA: Just saw your update, congrats OP!

Congrats OP!! Yes, this is not that uncommon and yes, the end result is usually the same one you experienced. The second test comes back fine like in your case.

If you drink too much water this can happen because people do this to try and "flush" drugs out if their systems. Next time you go in just drink less water before taking the test.

They told me not to drink or eat anything one hour before the test. Hope this helps!

I would talk to a lawyer since you have left your previous job. I would also say that you're over-hydrating a bit if you're urine is that dilute. And to be honest, they probably think your a user who is trying to fake out the test by flushing. Stop drinking water.

I've had a diluted sample before, but my job was never threatened for it! I was told to retake it until the sample came back clear, which it did at the retake.

Yeesh. Well, fingers crossed you're not hydrated!
