NWR: Drug Test for New Job

ashlynnisabella, on July 25, 2017 at 9:03 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 73

Hi all! So two Thursdays ago, I was offered a new job and accepted it. I put my two weeks in, and Friday is my last day. The new job required a drug test, and I did that last week, and never thought anything else about it. I've never done drugs, so had nothing to worry about. Well yesterday, I got an email from HR saying that my sample was 'negative - dilute,' and that I had to do another test by EOD today. If it comes back negative dilute again, I lose the job! Has anyone ever had this happen?! I'm freaking out about it. I drink water throughout the day at my desk, and I had no idea that that would make a drug test not be able to work! I'm eating a high protein breakfast with a soda.. Here's to hoping I'm not hydrated for this test!!

I've heard of this happening. I'm sure it will be fine this time.

I've never heard that before. A bit absurd IMO

Did they say specifically what it was that came back negitive? Avoid things like poppy seed bagels and let them know if you use an inhaler or some medication that may trigger that result.

That happens all the time. Happened to a few of my coworkers the first time they took their drug test too.

ETA: Before taking the test, we were all told exactly how much water we could drink without causing the test to come back diluted.

Nope, no specifics except for the guy said that it happens sometimes when someone is too hydrated. I didn't even know too hydrated was a thing, and definitely didn't know that you could cause a negative by drinking water?! So weird to me!

Unfortunately this does happen if you drink too much water before a drug test, because it dilutes the sample. (People that think they can "flush it out of their system"...)

FH went for a drug test when he was a pharmacy tech but got nervous (even though he doesn't do any drugs lol) and couldn't go. They sent him back out to the waiting room to drink water, but he wasn't allowed to have more than two cups.

I have to drug test people for my job and when someone drinks a lot of water they think you are trying to fake it. Lol. No more water for you today. Good luck and congrats on the new job!

FH lost a job because they gave him a 24 hr notice and he was on colonoscopy prep for his Crohns. He went as soon as he got the notice and they refused to test him since they closed in a half hour. It was horrible.

The water didn't cause the negative, the test came back negative but it was dilute so she has to do it again. Just drink less water and it'll be fine!

I had the same situation happen to me. I was sick the week before and took a very strong allergy pill and drank gallons of water. I told the company the reason it came back inclusive and they said if it came back like that again I would have to bring my doctors note. Luckily I didn't take it the day that I retook the test and I drank water a few hours before so it came back fine.

Good luck at your new job!

I have heard that a lot, just drink less liquid (water and soda). I routinely check labs for patients and we always check that.

I used to work for a drug testing lab. Basically if urine has too much water present it can dilute out medication you are supposed to be taking (think testing for Med monitoring) or dilute our something you don't want seen. Dilute urine is a common method of adulteration, so no lawyer needed- your case would be tossed out of court. Just don't drink as much liquid throughout the day and you will be fine.

Also, if you eat poppy seeds they can cause you to fail a drug test. --- just in case you have eaten some recently.

ETA: My stepdad and FH cannot have anything with them because they both are military and it can make them fail it.

This happened to me during the drug test for my current job. Just drink half as much water as usual leading up to it and you'll be fine the second time (that's what I did).

As long as your urine is yellow, it shouldn't be a problem. Don't stop drinking water, but keep it to a few cups before your test vs gallons. No stress! This is an easy one Smiley smile

Good luck for your follow up test! Perhaps if you have a similar result this time they can do another form of test, like a hair test.
