NWR: Doggy Parents- DIY Deshedding?

Haley, on June 7, 2016 at 12:38 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 19

My 5 year old Belgian Malinois mix is a wooly mammoth right now, and being that we are already hitting 110 degrees+ here in Phoenix, I need to help her deshed quickly. What are some shampoos and brushes you've used that really get down to the undercoat? Her hair is thin but there is a freakin' TON of it. Thanks in advance!

We used Furminator shampoo and a furminator brush on our lab, the effects lasted a few weeks which was miraculous compared to her normal amount of shedding. You need to be very gentle with the brush though, since it's almost razor-like.

Feed her good food. Grain-free, no chicken, healthy fats, are key to great coats.

other than that, I got nothing. but a great diet does wonders for less shedding.

The FURminator. It's a brush. It's crazy expensive. It's worth every penny.

We have a golden retriever and German shepherd.

Agree with onawho as well- we changed her diet and her coat is much healthier now as well. We use pro-plan with lamb bits.

Does the Furminator work for cats too? My cat sheds a lot and gets crazy hair balls.

I love the Kong Zoom Groom for my bullies. If you can invest in a Roomba too, it is well worth it!

We love this two-sided brush much better than the Furminator. It works wonders.

ETA: I have a Siberian husky. I could make another husky from the amount of fur that comes off after brushing. Lol.

I found a Sleek-EZ! i use it on my cats, dogs, and horses! Love it!!!

Also adding coconut oil/fish oil will keep shedding under control

I know its not DIY - but taking my dog to the groomer and getting the de-furminator wash helps A TON. A small investment to maintain my sanity =)

I use this shedding blade. It's cheap and it works SO SO SO well. I mean... the hair that comes off of my fox hound..... holy hell. Like with the furminator, though, you have to be gentle. The teeth are semi-sharp.

I agree with the Furminator - I love it and they have different sizes for different hair lengths.

@Almost Mrs. Wright - they do make versions for cats!

    FURMINATOR!!

We have a cattle dog who sheds something awful - we were constantly vacuuming everything, including the couch.

We took him to Petsmart for the furminator treatment, then just make sure we keep up with brushing him and it's so much better. Can't say enough about it. I'd take him in for the initial deshedding because of how much they'll get off him then get the brush. Smiley smile

Thank you for all the recommendations. I used to take her for deshedding treatments at Petsmart, but earlier this year she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that makes the skin on her face attack itself and we don't yet have her condition under control so I don't feel comfortable exposing her to public places like that right now. I prefer to groom her myself.

Dog groomer here! Yes yes yes to Furminator recommendations. That stuff is gold in the salon. Actually, I feel like the conditioner does a bulk of the job, but the shampoo is still a good first step. I am not sure if Petco/PetSmart sells the deshed line of Espree products, but that's another good brand.

And rubber brushes as @Amanda B suggsted are great in addition to/instead of Furminator brushes. They can also be used during the bath to remove even more hair. Just make sure to replace them when the "spikes" start wearing down, because they won't work as well.

FURminator is sold in pet stores so you can use the professional stuff without worrying about your dog being in the public groomer's.

Our bloodhound sheds like crazy - like HUGE tufts everywhere! (we are in the valley of the sun too) We use the brush Mac posted above. It works awesomely! AND she loves being brushed.

The furminator is the only thing that works for our husky!
