NWR dog split nail, no blood or sensitivity.

Ostrich, on November 16, 2015 at 7:57 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

Hi late night WWers. Lots of dog owners and everything I've googled looks to be for dogs that are limping, bleeding, etc... I can touch his nail so it doesn't appear to be nerve.

Came home and his foot was stuck in a wool snowman decoration. I cut him free and removed the wool, but am obviously worried of it snagging again. Places are saying to cut off the split, and bandage but those directions usually have implied he's bleeding or limping.

Pic below. Yes I know his nails are long and that's why this happened Smiley sad DH's been out of town and is the cutter.

ETA he's a 9 lb mini weiner so it's hard to isolate nail for wrapping

You could use a nail file to file it down so it doesn't snag so easily. It will eventually grow out but it's good he isn't in pain.

Could you file it a little or if it isn't to the quick use some super glue until it grows out?

Take him in at your soonest convenience and get it clipped ... by a pro.

I'd just leave it unless it starts bleeding. I worked at a day care for a lot of years and this happened often. It usually just kind of grew back together. Just be careful while you do routine nail trims.

DO NOT cut it unless you can cut off the whole split, it will just continu to split and go up to the nerve. I have 3 dogs and I have learned my lesson. I agree with the nail file and if you feel like it might get caught on something. tape the toe with masking tape or duct tape.

If he was an outside dog I would say don't worry about it as much but since he could get it caught on things again I would try to trim it yourself if you have dog clippers or go somewhere like petsmart and get it trimmed.

I would agree with trying to file it.

All very good ideas... WW>Google once again. He had already bit off my attempt at a splint. I'm going to file the rough edge and take him into the groomers tomorrow.

Haha awww what a cute baby. I have found in all of the nail trims I've done that dachshunds can be funny about their paws. Hopefully the groomer gets it close!

He HATES when people touch his paws, hence why I leave that to Nick. Luckily we just got him those low calorie training treats so we were properly prepared for tonight's endeavors, and actually seemed to like it and just licked my hand the whole time . The filing worked great, the super glue was tricky since it was so small, but it ended up making a seal over the nail so it'll get the job done. Groomer will probably be not so impressed, but I wouldn't be surprised if it just had to be trimmed and he ends up growing out the split in the nail. Thanks again everyone!

My pup has gotten splits before and I think you did all the right things! And he is super adorable.

Emily, you can use a knee high panty hose (sheer toe) or cut the foot part off of a sheer toe pair of panty hose. Put it on his paw and poke his nails through. You can cut a small hole for the split nail if you must. This will keep his nails separated and keep any hair out of the way. Then file. I use a grinder for nails, but in this case, a file is better for the dog. Hope this helps. Good luck!
