My dog usually sheds quite a bit but lately her fur is out of control! There are also thicker patches of fur near her hind legs which looks like some type of winter coat. We live in California and it's been a consistent 80-90 degrees lately. I feel so bad for her. I'm not sure if it bothers her. Any...

She's a cocker spaniel mix.

It's quite harsh on the skin. Dogs have skin that is thinner and more delicate than human skin and has different needs. I've also had vets tell clients to use Murphys Soap, dish soap, etc. Most vets know very little about what is available for pet shampoos outside those that treat certain skin issues (anti fungal, anti pruritic, etc.).

Woah, hang on! Vet tech with a decade of experience and a degree in veterinary technology here...

DO NOT give fatty trimmings from meat to a dog!!

There's a reason we call the day after Thanksgiving "National pancreatitis day" .... fatty goodies given to a dog that's not used to them can cause pancreatitis, which can be very serious or fatal.

Adding a small amount of fish oil to the food can help, but I'd be inclined to ask a groomer for advice, I'm glad there's a groomer posting on this thread.

If you do introduce coconut oil, please do some research and give tiny amounts at first! Too much at once can cause runny poos. In animals and humans lol

Eeek sorry about the undercoat shaving idea! I had a part husky mix that had super think fur and that's what the groomer suggested. Didn't even think about the type of dog you had. Oops

Thank you, Orchids! Also, if you think the coatis thinner and skin drier than usual, a trip to the vet might be in order. Any weight loss, or weight gain, change in appetite?

I had a terrier that had very sensitive skin... We used a dog shampoo that was oatmeal based to help soothe her skin... Also the more you wash her the more dry her skin will get and then itchy which could make fur come out if they are itching it a lot

I know our lab shed really bad in the summer when we had our a.c. cranked up. The air dried out (im guessing?) her skin. Go to your local pet supply store and most of them have sprays that are safe if they lick their fur but sooth the itchy skin
