NWR: Dog is shedding more than usual

Maui K, on September 10, 2016 at 8:52 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 27

My dog usually sheds quite a bit but lately her fur is out of control! There are also thicker patches of fur near her hind legs which looks like some type of winter coat. We live in California and it's been a consistent 80-90 degrees lately.

I feel so bad for her. I'm not sure if it bothers her. Any suggestions?

She's a cocker spaniel mix.

Have you brushed her? Maybe give her a bath and then brush her. That may help.

Definitely brush her. There's nice shedding brushes. My dog has thick and soft fur, she sheds pretty regularly and has times of the year where you can tell her coat completely changes, she gets thick patches where the fur has shed but is matted down. This brush works wonders.

I've been using this brush and it's great! But she still continues to shed and her skin is so dry. Smiley sad

I'll give her a bath tomorrow! I usually give her one per week but I read online that you shouldn't give them too many. So she hasn't had one in about 3-4 weeks

I guess I can't fix the shedding thing. But I am more concerned about her dry skin. And I wonder if her increased shedding has anything to do with her dry skin!

How old is she? I had similar situations with a couple of my dogs when they started getting some age on them. My doxie is 13 1/2 yo and his coat and skin have changed permanently I'm afraid.

Try adding more fat to her diet, either coconut oil or fish oil works well

It's that time of year where the days start changing, it's triggered by daylight length regardless of how hot it is outside, winter coats will start coming in

Check with a pet store and see if they recommend a certain shampoo Smiley smile I definitely wouldn't do once a week bathing. You could always get her undercoat shaved too. That'll help. She's a cutie.

We have a springer spaniel and he also has dry skin. We only bathe him a handful of times a year but brush him often. Have you asked your vet about her diet? Ours recommended a fish based diet since it has more oils. That's helped us but it's still not as good as we'd like it to be. We just started making his food and are hoping that will help too.

Give her the fat off of any meat you cook.

That will help with her skin which will help with her fur. Also my dog has similar fur (except he doesn't shed) and we give him a bath with human shampoo and conditioner because dog shampoo does nothing for him and dries him out and breaks his hair.

You don't want to shave an undercoat with double coated breeds, they may not grow back correctly.

    I disagree with you @originallaura

Do you at least use baby shampoo?

A lot of human shampoo have a lot of harsh chemicals that can be damaging to a dogs coat and sting their eyes.

Also, fish oil on the food is healthier then a fatty part of a steak and works better.

@Rebecca - I think I'll try to go to the vet and ask their opinion! Thank you Smiley smile

@OriginalLaura - like a chunk of fat off a piece of steak? Thanks for the advice! I'll try human shampoo once to see if that helps.

@Chip - got it! Thanks for letting me know Smiley smile

    Did you switch her food?

When my dog shed like crazy it was because we changed his diet.

Apparently the food we switched him to wasn't getting him enough iron.

    Ask the vet.

So, one of our cats has bad dry skin. We were told to sprinkle some olive oil on his food to help out with it. It helped out a lot.

Brush brush brush. We are coming up on the end of summer dogs are going to shed way more for the next month or so. And please PLEASE never shave your dog. Your dog's coat does so much to protect your dog's health both internal and skin. Do not ever shave an under coat.

Oh gosh, this thread. Professional pet groomer here (10+ years, currently work for a professional groomer organization). Stop furminating, it isn't the right brush for your dogs hair. The little tufts are very common in cocker spaniel mixes, but it's not really shedding undercoat like a big thick hairy dog would have (think golden retriever, husky, etc.). You can't just have undercoat shaved out on any dog, the dog would come back naked if you asked a groomer that. How old is that dog? How recently was she spayed? Age and changes in hormones can affect coat very visibly, but if she's younger it might just be how her coat is. You can also bathe them as frequently as you want, just use a hypoallergenic pet shampoo and follow up with a light pet conditioner (no baby shampoo). Make sure she is rinsed completely and then entirely dry after bathing (with a hair dryer on low heat). Shampoo reside can look like dandruff flakes.

@lynn just curious why no baby shampoo? I've always been told it's fine by vets
