NWR: Checks With Maiden Name

FinallyMrsJennings, on May 31, 2017 at 12:38 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

Hello everyone!

So I have finally completed my name change with every government office except for the Passport Agency. I have the paperwork, am getting my picture taken today, and dropping everything in the mail this afternoon! However, I just realized something and it's made me worried there will be issues submitting the change but I can't let that happen because I NEED my updated passport by August 9th. Here's the problem: went to write a check for the fee, and realized my check information is all wrong! My maiden name and old address are still on the checks! Obviously the passport agency will be able to see that the maiden name is correct and everything, but I'm just worried they won't deposit/cash (whatever they do with my money) if the names don't match. I've read things that say sign with the name on your ACCOUNT, not the name on the check, but my account is already changed to my married name which doesn't match the checks! Any advice on how to deal with this? Thank you!

Can you just go to the grocery store and get a money order?

Get a money order. The post office sells those.

I have no idea how any of that works but better to be safe than sorry. Agreed, can't you just get a money order? Alternatively, can't your husband just write the check for you?

I've never had a problem using checks with my maiden name/old address. I've been married since October 2015 and just got around to ordering new checks a few weeks ago, lol. But if you're worried about it, there are other payment methods as others have stated.

My bank told me its fine to use my old check as long as my signature matches what's on my bank account. They said I can cross out my old last name and write in my new one if it makes me feel better.

I didn't even think of a money order since I had the checks. And yes, my husband could write the check but he's at work and I wanted to get all of this taken care of today! Totally my bad for not thinking of it sooner. But I think I will just get a money order because I don't want there to be issues with getting the new passport! Thanks everyone!

So I did the exact same thing. I signed the check as First Maiden NewLast and wrote my new last name next to my name at the top and it went through. My bank was aware of the recent name change since I had recently changed it and it all went through.

I still have checks on my account with the address I moved away from over 13 years ago. No one says a thing.

I've worked in financial institutions for over 30 years. As long as the check clears, (doesn't bounce) - most places couldn't care less what name is printed on it.
