Good Morning Everyone,

I have a question to all the married users. Did your car insurance drop when you got married? Im wondering because I tend to see this online alot and curious to see how much truth to it? Im going to add FH to my policy as soon as we get married, I was wondering how much it would change things. He doesnt have his own insurance because he doesnt own a car. It would be nice to pay less than $220 a month for a car insurance for once lol

@christina that is weird - the only company I've ever seen where you can't be on someones insurance unless married is State Farm.

Every other company, if you're living together - you need to be listed on the same insurance policy - doesn't matter how the car is financed, its rarely relevant unless you're adding the leinholder as an additional insured.

Mine did not drop at 25 and I was told that was a myth.

DH didn't have insurance since he only drives a company car and is covered by their insurance, so mine went up by adding him! Just a tiny bit though (about $100/yr) since we only have one car on the policy

I've worked for a major car insurance chain the last four years and (at least for the company I work for) policies receive a discount when you are rated as 'married' rather than 'single' (I've been told the thought process is you'll drive more mindfully because you've got someone else you're living for besides yourself, but idk how true that is).

The 25 years old thing is also true, but only if you don't have a bunch of violations or lapses in your insurance up to that point. With my company, our policies are six months or a year long, and any changes like that take effect at policy renewal (so if you turn 25 two days after your policy renews, you won't see the discount until your next renewal).

    Hope that helps!

@AD You don't have to wait until November to shop around for a different insurance company. You can switch at any time. You can let your policy renew in a couple months and look into prices with other companies. If you find one you like, you can switch it. Let the new company know what date you would like to start you policy on. Call the old company and inform them that you are ending your policy and give them the end date. Make sure there are no gaps in your insurance. The new one needs to start immediately when the old one ends. If you have already paid your old company past that date, they will issue a refund for the percentage of the policy that was not used.

From a licensed insurance agent- YES your insurance will come down due to marriage but you will have to list your spouse on your policy (in most states and companies) so if his/her record is not favorable it may not help.

Also agreed with @Kate R. Do NOT get minimum limits. Talk to your agent about higher limits in case an accident does happen

It went down for my husband- we actually had a really funny conversation with the lady on the phone for his motorcycle insurance- because it forgot to update them and tell them that he was married. And she was like- oh that's why- it says here you didn't update this- but I believe you are (b/c of X or Y).

We had her on speaker phone and she didn't know- and I chirped up and I was like- NOT FOR LONG AFTER THIS.

We all started laughing hysterical. it was amusing.

Anyway- but yes- it went down. not a crazy amount- but yes.

I work for AAA and YES the insurance drops when you are married. The percentage will vary based on the mvr(driving record of the driver) guys do get a bigger drop as well since there insurance tends to be more expensive than girls.
