NWR Car Insurance? Does it Really Drop After Marriage?

Linda, on May 4, 2017 at 11:57 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 31

Good Morning Everyone,

I have a question to all the married users. Did your car insurance drop when you got married? Im wondering because I tend to see this online alot and curious to see how much truth to it? Im going to add FH to my policy as soon as we get married, I was wondering how much it would change things. He doesnt have his own insurance because he doesnt own a car. It would be nice to pay less than $220 a month for a car insurance for once lol

We were able to get on the same insurance before getting married. We pay ~ $200 for both of us, which was significantly lower than what I was paying for just myself. I have no idea if it'll drop after we're married (thinking it won't).

My insurance agent said that when FH and I get married, we just call and they'll combine our accounts and our payments should drop Smiley smile

There are many factors underwriters use when determining insurance rates. Marital status is one of those. But your premium amount may not automatically drop just because you are married. Like I said, there are tons of factors that go into premium rates, including gender, age, credit score, geographical location and profession.

If you are adding him as a covered driver, your rates will certainly go up but there may be a discounted rate for your marital status that wasn't there before.

"Getting married, therefore, generally has a positive effect on your car insurance rates. Most auto insurance carriers offer a discount to married drivers. Even men under 25, who generally get stuck with the highest auto insurance premiums, receive a discount for being married. Married same-sex couples (in states that recognize civil unions and domestic partnerships) also qualify for the benefit, at least from the two biggest U.S. auto insurers, State Farm and Allstate"

That makes sense then I hope it doesnt go up too much "/ when he has shopped around for insurance it was always way less than mine for some reason. Could be because hes older and has a longer driving history not sure. As far as the credit thing I dont think thats what is affecting me because I have a great credit so im not sure.

@AD, if you are paying $220 now for just yourself, and your FH doesn't have insurance so he is paying $0, then your premium is going to go up if you add him as a covered driver to your policy. You will not be paying less than $220, even with a "discount" for being married.

Also, your quote above states that "generally" marriage has a positive effect on your rates. Like I stated before, there are tons of factors that go into underwriters rating, so just getting married doesn't mean your rates automatically go down.

I don't see why it would. Where we live it goes down when you turn 25, years of driving experience, how many drivers per car and the car you have. In addition if you combine house insurance and any special groups you may belong to provide you with discounts.

Also wanted to add that it might be best to shop around for a new policy instead of just adding your FH to your current policy. It is recommended to shop around for auto insurance every 2-3 years. In general, the discount you get for being a "loyal" customer (usually around 5 years) is not going to be large enough to make a difference.

    Former insurance agent (still licensed)

Yes it does drop after you get married (literally, the quote changes when you click the married option even if all other information stays the same)- but if you're listed as married, most companies require that both spouses are on the policy even if one doesn't drive.

The reasoning is that married persons are generally more cautious

But also keep in mind, if you're combining policies and one of you is a bad driver, that bad insurance history may negate that married discount (or any other negative marks like credit score, insurance history, claim history, or if one driver is over 25 but the other is not)

H & I were already on the same plan prior to marriage, but when we got married it dropped about $15/month. Small but nice little savings.

We just saw our agent last Friday and she said that once we get married, we should get the multi car discount. We financed our cars separately so they can't legally add us to each other's insurance until we are married. I am not sure if this multi car discount will make it go down or if add another car will cause it to go up. Fingers crossed it goes down because we both have full coverage. Definitely don't need it going up.

ETA: I didn't see that he didn't have a car. Not sure if getting married is going to change anything.

FH and I went on the same policy with a new company after moving in together. It dropped significantly for both of us. Our next renewal will be after he turns 25, and the renewal after that will be after we are married. It would be great for it to drop both years!
