Vanessa R., on September 14, 2012 at 11:47 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

Anyone ever use it? Well I tried it last night for my puppy as she likes to chew on my hands...well after washing my hands many times I can not get it off my hands and I must have touched my lips because its there too....this stuff tastes awful and i cant get it off! any ideas how to remove the bitter taste?

P.S. didnt work, the dog was actually licking it

    Oh no!!!!

Maybe try fresh orange or lemon zest or juice? It's acidic, so it might hurt if you have any little hangnails but it might work...

I know they make those stainless steel bars that you "wash" your hands with in the kitchen and they're supposed to take the onion/garlic smell off your hands. Something about the metal element interacts with the odors...maybe one of those would help?

When I was training my kitty not to scratch the sofa I used orange essence to divert him. He hated it!

Give him ice or carrots to chew on, if he bites you roll his lip into his teeth so he will bite himself.

I did the same thing by accident. Got it all in my mouth because I sprayed it with the fan on (I know dumb me). I started feeling kinda bad for the dog. I just brushed my lips a few times, used some mouth wash, and used my benefit menthol lipgloss. it eventually went away.

I don't have any useful advice - I just wanted to tell you that I almost died laughing when I read this because I thought the most title meant you hated animals and I was wondering what horrible person would post about that. Good luck though!

I have always used Bitter Apple on my puppies and well into their adolescent years. The best way to get the taste/smell off is to either use a degreasing soap or I've sometimes had luck rubbing my hands on stainless steel (either your faucet or you can get stainless steel soap bars at Academy Sports). This also helps get the onion smell off your hands!

Bitter Apple is disgusting and usually works like a charm! Once my dogs had a taste of it a few times they usually would see the bottle and stop immediately! (I have mastiffs and they like to chew furniture, so I would leave the bottle sitting on the sofa so they would leave it alone. I had one sofa eaten twice...then I just got rid of the sofa till we were past the chewing stage!)

Note: When you introduce it to them it's best to spray a little in the sink just to get the smell on the outside of the bottle, let them sniff the bottle, then lift the lip and give them a little taste. Let them learn to dislike it without doing CON

Anything wrong. That way the next time the start chewing your hands more than likely all you'll have to do it show them the bottle and the chewing will stop. Sometimes it takes more than one taste for them to get the idea that it doesn't get better with time! Sorry this is so long and hope it works for your lil stinker!!!

My dog loved the taste!! also cayenne pepper When my guy was a pup I read a lot about puppies and biting, mostly its just play bites, so what i read (& it worked for me) was every time the little guy nips you, you yelp really loud and sharp!! (Ow!!!) then turn away from the puppy and don't give him any attention for a few minutes. If he nips again, repeat the process, it can take quite a while, but eventually he learns that you're not gonna give him the attention he wants when he is being nippy. If he's chewing furniture or stuff, always give him something else that is appropriate to chew. My other dog I could spray her in the face with a water bottle and she would stop doing whatever it was I didn't like- and it got to where she just saw the bottle and would stop, but this guy, maybe cause he's part golden retriever, thinks the water bottle is a fun game.

I tried it once when my dog had surgery and she kept eating her bandage...so the vet told me to use that. Well she licked it and kept making a funny face cuz it tasted bad, but continued to lick it anyway. And I too used my hands and washed them...but it didn't go away...I got it in my mouth and my eyes ugh....I think I just washed my hands several more times and then avoided touching my face as much as possible...it did go away. I also learned to apply it with a cotton ball or qtip from then on...but gave up on it.

I agree with Meta on the yelping thing. That really helped with my chihuahua.

I just went and sprayed this stuff on the corner of the couch fan was on and sprayed right in my mouth. It made me throw up instant. But how do you get rid of the taste and is harmful for us if it gets in your mouth..
