NWR and maybe TMI: dog ate a condom

Mrs. Lav, on May 17, 2015 at 11:17 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

He pooped it out this morning and seems okay, but I can't help feeling a little concerned. He's a little guy--only 7lbs. Any experience?

For the record, we're usually pretty good about wrapping them and putting them in the bottom of the trash can, but he still gets into the trash occassionally (I blame his persistence/trash skills on the fact that he was homeless before I adopted him, although that was almost 5 years ago).

Google tells me that he should be okay, but has this happened to anyone else?

I can say no......not yet LOL! My boy is just a year old and 120 pounds. But my experience with dogs eating things is if they pass it with out a problem then your in the clear. I only worry if it doesnt come out then I fear a blockage. If little guy passed it whole then no worries!

I think he should be fine. My dog eats socks all the time and they just come out the other end in a few days. He's much larger though, about 60lbs. As long as it came out he should be fine. If you notice that he's become lethargic, isn't pooping, or is vomiting I would take him to the vet. I've done a lot of research on this. I used to panic whenever the dog would eat a sock.

If he already passed it then he'll be fine. I think the biggest thing you'd worry about in that case is a blockage, especially since your dog is so tiny.

Thank goodness I'm not the only one! I don't have a dog but one of my cats used to do this ALL THE TIME when he was a kitten! Didn't matter if it was used or not, he was chowing down. Doesn't seem to have any lasting effects, except that we still have to make sure there are no rubber bands anywhere!

He will be fine. My dog 40 pounds ate an entire plastic dog bowl and popped it out over 3 days and she's fine.

He swallowed a balloon not a condom. To this day, we still don't know where it came from. We called our vet and he said he'll be fine.

I worked at a dog kennel in high school. One of our "regulars" once ate a (used) tampon. . .he was a pug, so not a whole lot bigger than your guy.

Moonride-- that is nasty!! Smiley tongue

I don't currently own a dog (my dearly beloved dachshund died when I was seven and I've never quite been able to get over the heartbreak), but I just had to pop in to say this thread has been cracking me up. Thanks for the laughs ladies, and long life and health to your doggiesSmiley smile

He'll be okay as long as it's already passed. It's when it's inside that you have to worry. And that is hilarious.

Mr. Pibb ate one of his bow ties (it has a metal hook to clasp together) and pooped it out in perfect condition (besides the poop). Not tips or tears. No blood in the stool. I consider that talent. So I think you are probably safe. Though I'm sure a call to the vet would help calm your nerves. It hasn't happened to us, but I'm sure you aren't the first in the world!

Our Fiona ate one once. FH was stalking her poop for days because for some reason when we lived at our old house, my FFIL would come over and pick up her poop all of the time and FH did NOT want him to find it.

I had a roommate's dog eat an entire pair of panties only to throw it up whole 3 days later. As in, my panties were in this dog's stomach for THREE DAYS.

But the fact that he passed it, I wouldn't be concerned.
