Non-white Dresses

Arely, on January 21, 2020 at 3:49 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 23
What are your opinions on wedding dresses that aren’t all white? I chose a dress that is champagne/ivory and my mother wasn’t happy with it, and now I’m not sure how I feel. 😕 Any tips?

So I haven't bought my dress yet but I have heard a lot of brides don't buy white dresses anymore. I have also heard that white photographs blue and ivory photographs white.

I think most brides have an ivory dress. Not many people wear white white. And most designers ivory looks pretty white. I wouldn’t worry about that. If you love the dress that’s all that matters. My dress is considered ivory. Usually ivory is more flattering on most people anyway in my opinion

Mine is ivory. It looks very light in person though. I wouldn't want a stark white dress. Plus I have a kid..so there's no illusion of purity there. Haha.

White dresses forever ago were a sign of purity. When most everyone believed in saving yourself for marriage. It's an outdated concept. Wear what you want.

My dress is Ivory champagne and I was leaning more to having a white dress but then I saw this one and I just fell in love. At the end of the day your mom is probably not going to like every aspect of your wedding but you should have the wedding and you should have the dress that you want because even if she doesn't like it she will get over it.

Champagne is just a shade of white in my opinion. Very common to see dresses in champagne, moscato, almond, etc. Especially when they have ivory lace overlay. I went to multiple bridal shops and only 1 carried a single white dress. All the rest are ivory or the other shades i mentioned. Stark white dresses are incredibly unpopular and not usually flattering.

Daughter's Rebecca Ingram dress was ivory lace/tulle over a pale "gold" lining.... It was gorgeous. Most people would say she had a lovely "white" wedding dress, but it had a soft ethereal glow that was absolutely stunning on her (redhead with pale skin & freckles; she did not think true "white" dresses were not flattering on her). Also, as a pp mentioned, few bridal salons actually stock many true white dresses because they are not super flattering on a lot of skin tones and are not popular now. One of the salons daughter and I visited was a Casablanca flagship store (higher end) and they had a brand new white dress they were selling for more than 50% off (a bride ordered it and then realized she didn't want white) and the consultant said it would likely take months to sell it. If you loved your dress when you chose it, trust your instincts! Smiley heart

Wear what you feel beautiful in! My dress was champagne colored and I don’t regret that I didn’t wear white.

I don't think the dress needs to be white to be bridal. Ivory and champagne can be super bridal

Honestly I think very few brides actually wear white. Most are ivory or some off white shade so I’m sure your dress is going to beautiful.

They’re gorgeous, mine was ivory and champagne, and it’s your decision not hers.

Ivory IS the new white. Sometimes it’s just a soft white, without the bluish tint that can happen with a stark white in photos.

Wear whatever looks good with your skin tone!

Mine isn't white! It's more of a beige color with white appliques. A lot of designers I tried on offered different colors for their dresses. I think it's becoming much more common to not have all white.

    I bought a blue dress.

And I love it! You can have a dress whatever color you want and you mother can either learn to live with it or learn to keep unsupportive opinions to herself.

In all fairness though, my sister wore a yellow dress and my mother wore a light green suit, so we're all a bit unconventional.

I loved a dress that was light grey... my mom and my FMIL didn't like it and really wanted me in a white dress... so I caved and ordered it in Ivory. I love it in Ivory too, so it's not a big deal for me. But at the end of the day, it's your dress. Unless your mom is paying for it, get the dress you want.

I love the off - white/ivory look. My dress is champagne with an ivory overlay and hints of blush in the detail. I agree with the others that pure white sometimes can be just too much!

I'm wearing ivory. I dont like white. If you like it, wear it. Your mom is not wearing it. I've had to tell my mother that it's not her wedding. Kindly, of course.
