Non-traditional recessional for the cello...need some assistance!

lauren10, on July 28, 2009 at 11:10 AM Posted in Planning 0 7

Hi all...I have 2 cellists playing for the ceremony, and I'm having trouble coming up with a recessional song, and want something up-beat and not classical. The issue is that I think they will play almost anything if I can find the sheet music for them (but obviously I want it to sound good too!) The ideas I have are Better Together by Jack Johnson, and Viva la Vida by Coldplay, but of course can't find sheet music for a cello for either of those. Any advice or help is appreciated from people that know cellos, had cellos at their wedding, song recommendations, links to sheet music, etc!

First, does your duo have anything in their usual repertoire that will work? If you have to find sheet music for them, that will be more complicated. Have you seen www.sheetmusicfox.com? I haven't gotten deep enough into the site to see how the sheet music is presented, but they have a good search engine--searching on "cello" yielded 795 results. They do ask for a donation. As for a particular song, in my recent search for musicians on YouTube I happened across a cello and guitar duo playing Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed," which I loved! Made me consider getting a cello instead of just a solo guitar. But that song itself may be too mellow for a recessional for you. Just a few random thoughts for now, good luck!

Also www.sheetmusicplus.com/instruments/strings-cello/17 may be worth looking at. You can search by artist, song, composer, etc. They do have more modern stuff like Coldplay, but will be more likely to find compositions for guitar and piano with modern songs. Lots of stuff is geared for string quartets, you may have to sift through a bunch to find something appropriate for a cello duo.

Ok Lauren now you've got me on a mission! A few more traditional arrangements here, http://www.8notes.com/Cello_Duet/. Now it's back to work for me, good luck! :-)

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! You may not find a lot of contemporary music written for two cellos. We usually ask for piano sheet music, and then arrange it for our instrumentation. Ask them if they could do the same. You may also want to ask them if there is a fee involved for arranging music. Depending on the piece, it may take hours of work. Also, keep in mind that you only hear two lines of music with a duet, so some music may not work as well. Have a few choices in mind, and ask your musicians which would work the best. In my opinion, Viva la Vida would be great. I just arranged that for our string quartet, and I can imagine the melody and the bass line being all you might need to make it sound like the song. Finally, as a tip to your musicians: they may be able to download something from one of the sites above easier than having you purchase and send it. They may also have a chance to look at at least the first page on-line before they make a purchase.

Thank you Rondo! I was wondering if they could use the piano music...they haven't gotten back to me yet but I'll ask about that. I appreciate the help!

This wasn't the recessional, but it was so cool: we recently had a quartet do Journey's Don't Stop Believing during the processional when the bridesmaids and groomsmen coupled in. It was beautiful!
