Non traditional catering

futuremrswmh, on August 30, 2017 at 2:10 PM Posted in Planning 0 35

What are some non traditional catering ideas you all had or would love at someone else's wedding? In the area we are having the wedding, there is not a ton of traditional catering options, and we don't want to pay an arm and a leg for travel fees. We have found an amazing taco truck that we are strongly considering but they don't have an option for anything for cocktail hour. We have restaurants in the area that cater but it's mostly BBQ places (which we are very picky about BBQ and they all suck lol) or places like Cracker Barrel or little diners. Idk what to do!!

I love the food truck idea. Have you tried contacting them to see if you can work something out for the cocktail hour?

Yes I've tried. Unfortunately they are a small truck and don't really offer any apps or anything, just tacos. I

The other problem with a food truck is that people will end up waiting in lines.

Maybe if you had a large assortment of food trucks?

I hope this doesn't count as bringing up old threads cause def not trying to start anything...

What was the catering plan before the date change? I know you're doing a new venue, can they recommend caterers?

They aren't a traditional venue either. It's actually a nature center. They suggested a BBQ joint that honestly is no higher quality than Dickeys BBQ. The venue isn't the issue, it's the town. It's the biggest town in the area but still fairly small. Getting someone to come from dallas area (about a two hour drive one way) would cost us a good extra chunk of change.

ETA: our original plan was the taco truck and we weren't going to have a cocktail hour. We were doing something small with family and bridal party and weren't planning on a full blown party reception if that makes sense.

Well you were asking the other day if there were things people would have added if they could have saved longer, maybe this could be one of those things? To me good food would def beat out something like adding a videographer.

ETA: saw your update re: original plan. Got it Smiley smile I'd shop around in nearby markets and see what travel costs will be, they might be lower than you imagine. Never hurts to ask Smiley smile

Im definitely considering upping our catering plan...when I found a similar taco truck in dallas and got a quote and travel fee and whatnot it was outrageous. Almost triple the cost of the original plan and about $500 in travel fees. And that still didnt include apps. We really wanted a taco truck because thats our thing, but right now its just frustrating.

We chose Wichita Falls due to some personal reasons as well as some family there that we absolutely want there that could not travel if it was elsewhere.

Yeah, I get that its frustrating when you want something but you can't make it work. Unfortunately you might have to temper your expectations and go with something more mainstream than the taco truck you originally planned with the smaller group, but the good news (I'm guessing..?) is that you'll have more of your loved ones around you that day.

I googled your location and caterers and found this one immediately, do a little more digging, i'm sure it'll work out.

Thanks LB! I'll look at that one! FH and I are foodies, so the catering is definitely something we want to work out and have everyone enjoy!

ETA: I just went to their website and quickly remembered reaching out to them originally. We never heard back from them. Unfortunately, that happened with a few potential vendors in the area.

Im looking into some other options, its just such a pain that everything seems reasonable until the travel cost is accounted for. I told FH we're about to have damn Chick-Fil-A at the wedding lol. (obviously joking)

I've seen pulled pork, taco bars, pasta bars, potato bars...you name it and it can happen. Anything is as unique as you want it to be.

We are having a Nicaraguan food truck cater our rehearsal dinner as a food truck. For the wedding, they are doing a plated meal still cooked on the food truck. It is saving us several thousands of dollars in travel and equipment fees.

My FH's cousin is doing a taco bar at her wedding in April, we are all looking forward to it. Maybe I will look into some other food trucks in the area and see what options they can offer

A friend of mine had her wedding catered by a food truck owner that also does catering gigs, so it was a food station setup. it was amazing, and the truck came and did the midnight snack, which was super fun.

So I asked for recommendations for caterers through my fb as I have a large group of people that have been recently married. This dude just suggested I have a pot luck wedding. Um, no. Id rather not spend my wedding night with food poisoning...especially considering 90% of my guests are driving 2 or more hours to my wedding.

Market street does offer some great appetizer options and can deliver from most locations. I don't know what kind of food your looking for but Johnny Carino's is decent and they do catering.

UPDATE: my dad is in a motorcycle club and the guy that usually caters their events found out I was getting married (he's been around for years and knows us all)! He told my dad that if I paid for the food, he would do everything else as my wedding gift! This would obviously be a very appreciated gift, what do you all think of this idea?!
