Non-Saturday Weddings, is Friday or Sunday better?

Chelsea, on November 20, 2015 at 10:52 AM Posted in Planning 0 41

So we are about to sign the contract for our venue, the date being March 10, 2017 (a Friday). March 12 is available though, so I just wanted to get some of your input here. All Saturdays in March 2017 are taken so we’re stuck with a Friday or Sunday.

Our wedding is an hour south of most of the people from my side, and 3.5 hours from FH’s family and friends. It’s going to be at night (ceremony at 5pm most likely) so people from my side can, at the least, just take a half day off of work or something as opposed to the whole day. But I’m worried about his family. Most people I’ve asked have told me they think Friday is better & people will definitely leave early on Sunday, but I’m worried about people not showing up at all if it’s on a Friday? I guess if they really cared and really wanted to be there, they would figure out a way. We'll send STDs way in advance.

Just wanted to hear your thoughts from anyone who is having/had a non-Saturday wedding and what your day is looking like!Smiley smile

As a guest, I would 100% prefer a Friday wedding to a Sunday wedding. I've done both and the Sunday wedding was actually terrible - guests left right after dinner, I barely drank. Just not fun :-\

I would prefer a Friday wedding as a guest. It may be slightly inconvenient for some people, but I've been to a few Friday weddings and they were all great.

As a guest, I would much rather attend a Friday wedding. It's a great excuse to take the day off or leave early, and with enough advanced notice that shouldn't be an issue for most people. Sunday, however, I would probably leave the wedding early. Sunday weddings should be held earlier in the day. At least in my position, it's more of a hassle to take a Monday off than a Friday - most people are "checked-out" by 1pm on a Friday anyway. Also, if you do Friday, people will probably stay around Saturday and you can have some day-after fun!

Definitely prefer a Friday wedding, especially if it's in the evening.

I attended a Sunday wedding a few years ago and didn't get to stay for the reception at all due to travel time and not being able to get off work.

I've been to a couple of Sunday weddings and they were a bit more mellow, ended a little earlier, but were still really fun! I've never been to a Friday wedding. I'd say go with Sunday because some in town guests might need to take a half day off of work to be there on time for a Friday wedding. And Friday evenings I'm always exhausted from the work week. For people traveling, they will likely have to take a day off regardless.

If it's a night wedding I would prefer Friday over Sunday. If you could swing something like a lunch or brunch then Sunday would be better.

I'm getting married on a Friday night. I chose it for a few reasons: 1. It saved us about $2,500 compared to a Saturday at our venue 2. It left an entire weekend for us to hang out with our guests and for them to relax/unwind before they go back to work on Monday.

For an evening wedding, I think Friday is preferable. I wouldn't mind a Sunday wedding though if it was a daytime or brunch-ish event.

Friday evening - or Sunday brunch.

I would hate a Sunday evening event. By Sunday afternoon in my world I'm spent- I just want to go home and sew and watch bad TV- no way I'd want to get dressed and have to travel. But Sunday morning is doable. I think personally I'd prefer Sunday morning to Friday afternoon- but eh. They are both fine.

I'm actually a little nervous/stressed we landed on Friday afternoon/evening wedding- it wasn't not ideal- it's going to result in a fuckload of traffic issues considering its' in north jersey- but we have set course- no turning back now.

Edit- I would really take into consideration your location and time of year and travel issues- like summer- we have massive roads that are completely clogged Friday afternoon and Saturday morning b/c of the shore travel to Atlantic City and any of our beaches. So- keep that in mind and where you may have to travel at what hour.

I'm having a Sunday wedding. Our venue offered two choices booking Friday and Saturday (two-days for one price) or booking on Sunday. Due to budgetary constraints, we chose Sunday. We haven't had any backlash from our guests. Either way, most of our guests are from out of town and would have to take time off to travel either Friday or Monday, so I don't think our date really makes a difference.

However, since your guests are closer to you, I think the Friday option is better.

I would prefer a Friday wedding if it's in the evening, as you say. We went with Sunday because we're doing brunch and everyone who is coming into town is staying for minimum 4 days, so they didn't have a preference.

Local? Friday. Destination, honestly probably Sunday. Flights are cheaper.

I'm surprised, but I also don't drink, so I don't get the whole hangover thing.

I prefer Sunday, but it's rare that I don't have to travel for a wedding, so they're all "destination" to me.

If it's evening, Friday. Which I think you already decided on.

If you want to do an earlier daytime (think brunch) wedding, then Sunday.

My niece got married on a Sunday and a lot of people left her reception early. Her reception started around 5 pm. I agree that if it is destination that Sunday would be best.

Definitely a Friday. If you want a party atmosphere, you will get that with a Friday wedding but not with a Sunday wedding. Sunday weddings will end early. Also, it is usually easier for people to take off or to leave work early on a Friday than it is on a Monday. And if you have anyone traveling/flying in, it is usually more expensive to fly on a Monday.

I am planning a Friday wedding and so far guests seem to be very open about coming for it. Most people are relatively local and are excited to take a half day or even the full day off from work and use the wedding as an excuse for a long weekend. I'm sure once we send out the invitations there will be declines but you'll get that with any wedding, no matter the day. Just give your guests ample time to prepare so they can ask for work off / schedule a half day, etc. I would suggest a Friday wedding rather than Sunday if you're choosing between the two.

I was literally just talking about this. Most of the weddings (4 out 5 so far) that I had attended this year were Friday or Sunday. Friday is such a hassle. At this point in my career is is SO hard to get days off. So for me its hard to make a Friday wedding unless its after 7pm and local (like I could leave work at 5:30, and make it to you're venue). The one Friday wedding I did attend that wasn't local I had to bombard the day off in a company meeting. I know this is not the norm at every job, but I am likely going to miss a wedding in april on a Friday bc its so hard to get a day off. So if I have to drive more than 30 mins to get there I would say Sunday. On Sundays ppl will leave earlier and the party vibe will be slightly less.

I'm having a Friday wedding and have had zero complaints about it! This way everyone can party and most people have Saturday off to recovery Smiley winking

We are having a semi-destination wedding (near FH's parents, 45 min from our house, farther from most of our friends and family). Almost everyone needed to travel for ours, even our local friends. We chose a Sunday afternoon. We will end by 9, so local friends who want to work the next day can, and those who want to party later have the advantage of cheaper room rates because it is a Sunday. Our out-of-state guests would have had to take a day off for travel anyway. Keep in mind that every day will be inconvenient for someone and you need to chose a date that works for you and your VIPs.
