Non-denominational Premarital counseling

Team Simons, on June 18, 2013 at 3:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

Hello Brides!

I have a query for you all and I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts! I am a Nichiren Buddhist and I chant Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo. My Fiance does not follow any religion. He respects my religious values and beliefs but does not prescribe to them. We both agree that premarital counseling is necessary but we haven't found any NON-DENOMINATIONAL marriage counseling resources. Do you have any resources that you would recommend?? Thank you for ALL of your suggestions!

My suggestion would be to look for a couples councilor, and tell them that you want to do some pre-marital counselling. They might be able to recommend you to someone else if they don't do it. There are tons of non-denominational couples counselors.

I agree with Valerie, a couples counselor should be able to help. You can also look at some pre-marital books, like The Five Love Languages or just books in general to get you thinking about your life past your wedding. I wish I could remember the other book I had, but it was mainly questions to ask yourselves, each other, your families, etc.

I hope you'll stick around and update your avatar (the rings) to ANY unique picture from Google we can remember you by! This post tells you how to do that: https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/welcome-to-the-weddingwire-forums-please-read-if-you-are-new/b433c40c1a62b96a.html

@marlina I'm going to ask my religious leader that has known me since I was a child. He is a buddhist as well but I am opting for a non-religious wedding.

As a devout atheist and agnostic, we didn't want a shred of religion. We found a psychologist who is specially trained in the John Gottman method. Gottman's work is all based on 30 years of research and has nothing to do with religion (except when people want to include it as part of their lifestyle). Check out the Gottman Institute. He also has a number of great books. You could buy (or get from the library) 2 copies of The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work and read it and do the exercises together.
