Non-dancing reception ideas

Princess Moonbeam, on January 22, 2015 at 12:59 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

Hi there! While my fiance and I absolutely want music and dancing at our reception, we (mostly I) have quite a few family members who do not dance. Period. Any ideas on some fun reception activities for the non-dancers of the group? We're going for a very fun, laid-back vibe, so idea is too crazy for us!

Thanks in advance!

Ditto. Photo booth. People of all ages love them and it's a fun keepsake to take home the photo strip. Plus, your guests can sign a guest book with their pictures in it for you to keep. MUCH better than just some signatures in a regular guest book.

Adults who don't dance can occupy themselves with food, drink and conversation. It isn't a child's birthday party to plan games.

While I agree that it isn't a must for you to provide an activity for everyone who doesn't dance, I did see a cool idea at a bridal show I went to this weekend. It was a service that brings casino games to the reception. You can play blackjack, roulette, craps, and a bunch of other games. It seemed like it would be really fun.

Still have some music, just no dance floor. Maybe a lounge area instead for guests? 30s/40s music could be a good option, since (unless you have people who KNOW how to dance to it), people won't automatically dance to it. Smiley smile

Just clarifying - you still plan on having music and dancing, right? And you're just looking for ideas of things to have at your reception for the non-dancers to do while you guys are dancing your pants off?

As for things to do - photo booths are definitely fun. You could also put disposable cameras on the table and have an iSpy game so the people not dancing can try to snap a picture of things happening on the dance floor.

Yes, we want to have music and dancing for our guests who do like to dance. And for us! But I have a lot of family members who are extreme introverts who would never hop on the dance floor, and I don't want them to feel excluded.

A photobooth is definitely a great idea, though we'll definitely have to DIY that for budget sake. I also love the games ideas. That would definitely go with our anti-uptight wedding theme Smiley smile

    Thanks for the responses everyone!

We are having lawn games. Corn hole, bocce ball, etc. We are also having a fire pit so people can just mingle and drink. We are also very laid back and we are very non traditional. I went to a wedding where there was no dancing and we stayed until 2 am just hanging out and playing games. It was a blast.

They can act like adults and make conversation with the people around them. And the Photo Booth is a good idea too. Games. No.

Don't bother with the disposable cameras; everyone has a cell phone with a camera.

Our venue offered a lounge area and had a pool table that they could bring in from downstairs. Maybe you could have different activities like the shoe game where the DJ asks the Bride & Groom different questions and they raise the bride or groom's shoe to show who it's true for, maybe incorporate a photo slideshow after dinner and before cake for guests to watch. I've heard of karaoke at some weddings but that's definitely a know your crowd thing. Photobooths are very popular. Perhaps if you have a space you can have outdoor games like cornhole. You could print out mad libs or create personal crossword puzzles/word searches. I've seen coloring stations for kids. We had a few older relatives who didn't dance at all unless it was a couples slow dance, they were fine just socializing and drinking so don't over think it too much. Good luck!

I second Kassy L! We are having board games at the reception. We want people to have fun, and for us that is playing games together. If people want to be social, they can. But they're not obligated.

Ok seriously though. I love the photobooth idea, maybe some stuff like a comfy couch for people to hang out on and talk... like a "lounge" area?

Adults who choose not to/don't like to dance amuse themselves at social events with conversation and food. So make sure you have enough to eat and drink, and they'll be fine. Its not your job to occupy adults who don't want to dance!

My fh hates to dance even with alcohol in him. He however loves to play cards so late on when I am dancing my ass off he can play poker with some if the other guys who don't like to dance. Since its also his wedding I wanted it to be fun for him to.

If you have it in your budget, maybe you could have different performers. If you have friends that are dancers, artists, etc. maybe they would be willing to help. I have done weddings where the wedding couple's friends have done singing and dancing performances and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Personally, I wouldn't provide any extra entertainment. About half the adults at our wedding didn't dance. They just chatted amongst themselves.

I love photo booths, but would introverts really get into that?
