No wedding cake?

Hope, on December 27, 2017 at 6:16 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 31

Hello everyone!

Obviously wedding cakes are a wedding tradition, but neither my FH or I like cake/frosting and we're already dishing out so much $ for the rest of the wedding. What if we just decide to not go with a cake and have cookies instead? Has anyone tried this? Advice please!

We are doing cake because FH wants to but I think it's totally up to You! It's your wedding so do it the way you want!

All of our guests were traveling from out of town/state. We wanted to share a piece of our new hometown with our guests. We decided to go with a local bakery that is famous for their donoughts. It was a huge hit, and wayyy cheaper

I agree that you should absolutely do what works for you. I’m having a cake because I love me some cake but I’ve dropped lots of other traditional elements that mean nothing to us.

I am very traditional so we are having one just for the sake of tradition. Neither of us like cake but we know plenty of our guests will. I called the local grocery store bakery (their cakes are just as good and way cheaper than the other area bakery's) and asked what it would cost for a very simple two tier white wedding cake for 75 and they said only $150.00. Maybe if you keep it really simple you can find a cheap local option for you.

I think that it would be okay to skip cake if you have other desserts

Cake can be affordable if you don’t go crazy! Get quotes from local bakeries before you rule it out completely.

I’d be disappointed if I went to a wedding that didn’t have cake!!

If you want to maintain the cake cutting tradition, you could still have a small cake on a pedestal cake plate. It doesn't have to be an official "wedding" cake. A simple frosted cake from the grocery store, with some fresh flowers or a cute topper is perfect. You can offer it to your guests along with cookies or any other dessert.

I would be disappointed if there was no cake at a wedding. It’s my favorite dessert and I do expect it. To cut costs we are having a small cake for the cutting tradition and a sheet cake in the back.

If you could do a variety of sweets, I think you would be good! If it's just about cost, do you have a public near You? Their cakes are D E L I C I O U S and budget friendly!

My husband also hates cake, and I am not the biggest fan, so we did cheesecake. We bought retail cheesecake from a local bakery that was amazing. It was also $120 for 75 people. Everyone loved the cheesecake!

I’ve actually been to a couple nice restaurants that had cookies as one of their dessert options. It’s kind of a new hipster thing to do, lol. So if the cookies are gourmet and really delicious maybe it would be okay, but I’m sure some guests would still miss the cake. I’ve been to a lot of weddings and I don’t think I’ve ever been to one that didn’t have cake, or at least cupcakes. But I wouldn’t really mind if there was no cake as long as some type of dessert was offered.

What about doughnuts? When people do doughnuts, are they doing them in Addition to cake, or Instead of cake?

Actually now that I think about it more, I totally did go to a wedding that didn’t have cake! They just had fancy tasty ice cream sandwiches. It totally was a hipster wedding though. Lots of things about it were non traditional, so it made sense and fit the couple (and their friends and family were mainly super chill and didn’t seem to mind). I guess it would be kind of odd if your wedding is really traditional except for the dessert.

I don't think I'm going to have a big cake. I think I want to have a cake to cut still for FH and I, but then I think we're going to go cupcakes. I've heard there's always so much cake left over and cupcakes you can get different flavors a little easier. I went to wedding that had a bunch of different desserts and I can't honestly tell you if cake was one of them (other than the small one they cut) because there were so many other delicious things to go for (I'm not a huge cake person either)

I went to a wedding expo and there was a cookie bar with jugs of milk. It was really cute although it might be hard to keep the milk cold.

We arent having a real cake. We dont really want cake but my mom does so we are getting a sheet cake from like sams club or something and have it cut up in the back and then like a small tiny cake for us to just cut into and smash our face with lol

But its more cost effective to go with a sheet of cake and cut that thing up. Most ppl may not even eat the cake so I dont even want to dish out so much on it

Agree with PP, if there is a Publix near you, they do a great job. Also check out Costco. You can do a small display cake, and have sheets in kitchen.

Our caterer makes a German chocolate lava cake that is cooked in a Dutch oven and served with an ice cream scoop. I know it’s still cake but kind of a different twist. I think you should do what you want. Up until our caterer said they would do this for no extra cost my FH wanted to do pie because he likes pie better. Neither of us are huge cake fans.
