No Room Block?

Sammer84, on March 15, 2013 at 5:19 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

Am I crazy or have others done this? The hotels we looked at did not have much of a discount and required a number of rooms to be filled that we (parents included and they are paying!) weren't really comfortable with. We don't have a TON of OOT guests and nothing big is really going on that weekend. I am planning to have an "accommodations" section on the website with links of recommended (i.e. good hotels close to the action) hotels as well as sites like airbnb.com so if a family or even three friends are traveling they can find a small apt. to rent which is surprisingly often cheaper once split.

Just looking for thoughts and experience!

I am in the same boat! We decides against the room block. I did do a ton of research and posted about 5 different hotels and their prices on my wedding website to give people an idea if what they would be spending

I am not doing a room block. So many of our guests live in the town that we're getting married in (or close enough not to get a hotel) that we didn't see the point.

It's NBD, people can book their own hotel.

It's simpler logistically if you're planning on having a shuttle or doing OOT bags to have a block. But otherwise, it's a nice gesture but certainly not required.

Phwew! Thanks gals Smiley smile Yeah the OOT bags crossed my mind, still not sure what to do about that but luckily the venue is 1 mile from downtown and cabs arent a big problem in Louisville...at least I don't think it'll be Smiley smile I'm sure I could rope my 17 year old cousin into driving people, haha!

No room block here either. We're getting married about 20 minutes away from the Gold Coast which is a massive tourist beach strip so there are literally thousands of hotels and accommodation options. Unfortunately, our venue doesn't have anything particularly close because we're just under the hinterlands (half way between the coast accommodation and hinterlands accommodation). So I've just put up some recommended places and some have given us discounts anyway without room blocks.

I think the accommodation section is a good idea for your website. You can list a bunch of hotels and even airbnb. However, there are some really nice advantages to getting a block of rooms.

For one thing, your guests can hang out together at the hotel. Another is the transportation aspect. People can car pool together, or arrange for transportation to/from the wedding from one location. Most hotels will offer some kind of discount too. Since your block is not that big, why not look into getting a courtesy room block. This is the kind of room block where you don't have o put up a deposit and you are held responsible for unused rooms. Here is more info on getting gone of these : http://grouptravel.org/wedding/what-is-a-courtesy-room-block-do-i-need-one-for-wedding-guests/
