Newspaper Announcement

Lillian, on March 8, 2017 at 4:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

Are these still a thing? We got engaged in my hometown with my parents (so cool) but I live in a different state-where my FH is from. My mom wants to make an engagement announcement in the local paper where I grew up, but also for the local paper where we live now. I think my mom is sad that she does not get to be more involved, but when I asked my FMIL about it she said that she doesn't think people do that anymore. Did you do this? Have you seen this done recently?

People still do it in my hometown, but it's a small old fashioned place. We are doing one, just because it's what is done where I'm from. And it's free!

I was going to ask, this is still a thing? I don't see the harm but I definitely don't find it necessary. It may just be a keepsake for her. Smiley smile

I grew up in a tiny rural town, and people do still do it there. I didn't, since I don't live there anymore and FH isn't from there.

It seems really outdated. And it's kind of cheesy.

I think it also might be a keepsake thing, I know she is probably sad she couldn't go dress shopping with me, and has to do all wedding talk over phone or text Smiley sad

    The NY Times does it.

I'd let her do it as long as FH doesn't object to it.

They still do it in the Bay Area of CA. I wanted to post one in the times but waited to long. Oh well. I think it's fun.

My hometown does it. We didn't do an engagement announcement, but my mom said she wants to do a marriage announcement.

My mom wants to do it too. I'm not bringing it up, hoping she forgets. Lol.

They still do it in my hometown and we are planning on putting one in! It may be old-fashioned but it's also a keepsake and tradition in my household. (My mom and I would read the announcements together!)

I grew up in a really small town and people still do this. My real mom offered to do this for FH and I, we don't care if she puts it in the paper. I'd be fine if she's forgotten about it.

Yes - still a thing. I am laminating one I found in the local paper today for one of my couples.

I also worked for the local paper, and know how much the staff really enjoys that part of their job! The announcement usually includes a photo, info about the couple, their families and education/career achievements (if any) and a brief description of the bride's dress, and their venue.

It's still done, but it's up to you if you want it done. Might be nice since its in your hometown. Those that watched you grow up might want to know.

I hadn't thought about this much; but may have to do it! I know 110% of everything is digital now; but I do remember going to the library & being able to pull up articles from grade school & doing some family tree research, etc. It was nice to know that the info is available later on. And I like the idea of a keepsake : )
