New TLC show: Curvy Brides

Kasheena, on July 23, 2014 at 3:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 23

I've read so many threads on here from curvy brides who are anxious about dress shopping. Well it looks like TLC is airing a new show that focuses on a bridal boutique that caters to curvy girls. http://thecurvyfashionista.com/2014/07/tlcs-curvy-brides-shines-light-curvaceous-couture-bridal/

Maybe seeing other women find their dream dresses regardless of their dress size will help brides on this site know that they can too. I can't wait to check it out.

No matter how much weight I lose...I will always be curvy. This is awesome!

Same here PRP! Thanks for sharing Kasheena. Smiley smile I have been to two bridal boutiques to try on dresses. David's Bridal was terrible, but the local one was amazing. The consultants were so sweet and were actually kind of curvy themselves!

Awesome!! I too am a "curvy" bride!

It is a darn shame though that "curvy" women have to be singled out. Why can't it just be a show featuring all types of women instead of putting them into their own category? We're all women, regardless of size. Not a personal attack against the OP, just sayin'.

@KT I agree but unfortunately the fashion world is very segmented by size. I remember watching Say Yes to the Dress: Big Bliss and being like really.....did they have to call the show BIG bliss. Anyway......I'm just glad they are catering to a group of women who are often ignored.

I totally agree! Why did they need to specify the girls as 'big'? So rude. Just have a mix of sizes- that's all anyone is asking for!

    Big Bliss....wow...what a horrid title.

The only Say Yes to the Dress I enjoy is Atlanta because of the accents. hahaha

Even when I am under 200lbs (which I am hoping for my wedding) ... I have big boobs and wide hips ...even more so after having our daughter. I am literally terrified of shopping so I am glad to hear that you had a good experience Annael25.

@Kasheena- I always felt the same way when they singled out big women. Why cant it be bling bliss or something? Darn shame but thats the world we live in.

I love it! I bought my dress at a plus size boutique called The Curvy Bride in NJ. Nothing short of amazing. It was the only place I went - and I am so glad I did. I knew I could not squeeze myself into a size 10 and feel good about anything I would buy. When I found out about this shop I was like thats it, this is where I will buy my dress. I had a wonderful experience and would recommend it to anyone thats curvy like me!

I bought my dress from a plus size bridal shop. I loved that no matter what dress I wanted to try on, they had it in my size and it fit! No, the dress will look better once it's your size. For the first time in my life, I tried on dresses that were falling off of me! po

Punkrock- I would recommend going to a bridal shop aimed towards plus size brides. A lot of girls leave regular bridal shops feeling down about themselves and defeated. I never felt that way, at all. I felt great!

I tried on dresses at a big name place in MN (everyone said they have SOOO many dresses..but when it was my turn they had roughly 3 that I could try on). I went to Davids Bridal and had the experience I would expect there...fine but nothing special. Went to a place called Luxe (that welcomes brides of all sizes) and it was a dream...they gave me a robe that actually fit (the last one was scandalous!!!)...bridesmaids and brides all looked happy trying on dresses! I even found some I really liked that fit well (and wow the corsets they put in them really helped adapt to whatever size). I had a great time except for when I was trying to decide the lady kept telling me the reason I was having a hard time was because I had seen to many dresses (this is just BS if you ask me). Anyways...I picked a dress from the location and will be excited to get married in it.

I can't wait-- I love all the wedding shows but I'm kind of over the snobby drama queens they seem to always have on the original SYTTD.

I bought my dress at the shop, Curvacous Couture that the show is based on. I have been a bridesmaid 13 times and HATE dress shopping. That being said I was peterfied to go dress shopping and I found the shop online. It was the absolute best experience I have ever had. The owners, and consultants are fabalous!!! I never imagined a shopping experience would be as great as it was!!! I am beyond excited and happy for the show. Those ladies deserve it for all they do to make "big" girls feels amazing!!!

I bought my first dress from this store. I am really happy to see they have a show. I thought the idea behind the shop was fantastic and very much needed. I went with my Mom on a weekday and had Yukia, one of the owners, help me find a dress. She was awesome and the shop is really, really nice. She explained to me why she opened her shop and I told her I appreciated what she was doing. All women need to feel wonderful and special during the planning and picking out a gown is one of the most important, if not the most important, part of the whole process. She should be able to try on a dress and not have the dress thrown on her or held up in front of her and be told to use her imagination. UGH!

This sounds neat but, I don't think people realize that it goes both ways. Yes it sucks when they don't have dresses in your size whether their dresses are too big or too small. I had to try on a dress that was 14 sizes too big. I had no clue what my dress would look like and I kept falling because it was so tall I couldn't not step on it. I think everyone in the store had a free show. Finally I bought my dress in a size zero and it is so big you can see my entire body because it sticks out too far. I think it is awesome that they make these stores, and that this is becoming into a show, but I hope that people realize that you can be any size and have the same problems.

Future Mrs. Matthews--very true, this goes both ways. When I 'said yes to the dress' it was also 14 sizes too big and we didn't even try to lace the corset--just used lots of clips. It had straps but they were falling all over, and it was huge around the bottom. I had to kind of imagine how my actual dress would feel (now that I have it, I do really like it). Smiley smile

@jenn I am glad no one was in the fitting room with me. I have a ball gown so I kept tripping over it, because apparently I am also short. Then when I went to look the clips couldn't keep it up it was too heavy and it slid down. Luckily I caught it!

@Northern MN- was it The Wedding Shoppe!?

Yeah, while I did buy my dress there, I was not entirely pleased with my experience. My consultant was not super awesome- I actually requested a specific consultant and was not given her, which i was bummed about. And the dress I purchased, which was my dream dress- literally had every single thing on it I wanted and I described it perfectly to her at the beginning- she did not bring it out to me until the very last dress, and not until I told her "just ignore my budget and bring me a dress that has everything on it I want". It was not even OUT OF MY BUDGET! And when she brought it to me she goes "I don't think you will like this one, but we will try it anyways". Ummm it was literally EXACTLY what I had described to her.

And also, us curvy ladies have to try on dresses in the building that is made for prom dresses, NOT the bridal building... which really annoyed me. And you hit the nail on the head about the selection... just minimal for curvier ladies.
