New suit required?

Amanda, on March 6, 2023 at 4:12 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
My fiancé owns a nice suit which is about 10 years old. He thinks wearing the suit will be fine (and obviously less expensive), but I think getting a new suit makes the occasion more meaningful.
Would you be ok with your groom wearing a suit that he already owns and is hanging in his closet?

I would be OK with it, if that’s what he really wanted. But I would definitely encourage him to go try on new suits before making a final decision, to see if that changes his mind.

As long as it still looks good, I don’t understand why he would need to buy a new suit. Most guests don’t buy new clothes for one time wear to each event they attend.

As long as his suit is still in good condition, there is no need to buy a new one. My fiancé will be wearing a suit he bought about 2 years ago. He did buy a new shirt and tie though so he still gets that new feeling for a lot less money.

Well, not everything wedding has to be new and I see he's being practical. But, also not everything has to be the lowest price for budget's sake. I would have him retry it and see if the fit and style are how he envisions getting married. Don't forget, he'll have a groom's boutonniere and a big smile for you. You can still gift a fresh shirt, cufflinks, tie, shoes, etc. If he rarely wears suits in his daily, then it will still be special occasion.

To answer your question, I thought my husband would wear one of the tuxedos already in his closet, but then he opted for a new dinner jacket. He has re-worn it a couple times since, meanwhile neither of my dresses fit. Ha

My hubby, for our "convalidation" ceremony in June, is wearing a formal black suit he bought 2 years ago and wore only a few times, so it's in excellent shape (and so is he, lost 20 lbs and it probably needs tailoring). But I bought him a new dress shirt with French cuffs, and some new ties, one of which is more colorful and will be perfect for our morning ceremony. I'm actually hoping he won't need new dress shoes - he has nice ones and again, only worn a few times, but he's had trouble with his feet since in the past few months, so we'll see. But as long as the suit looks new and looks good on him... However, unless your budget is truly constricted, I'd try to get him interested in a new suit - I'm sure he'll need a new one eventually so what better time than now to get one. Incidentally, 2 elements of my bridal ensemble are not new: I have a new dress and headpiece, but the shoes are my Easter shoes from last year, worn a time or two, (I went crazy trying to match the creamy ivory color of my dress and it happened the shoes I already had were the best match!) and I added a sheer "coat" for over the dress, same color, that I'd bought a year ago to wear with another dress.
