New England Farm/Barn Venue Ideas needed

Tiffany, on October 29, 2012 at 3:24 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

We're looking to have an affordable wedding (i.e. less than 15k) with about 100-110 people. It seems like bringing in your own caterer and alcohol would save money, but it's been hard to find places that allow this. We're most attracted to barns, farms, camps, settings with New England charm, etc. We'd love to find a place where people can sleep nearby or at the venue. And we're looking to get married between Aug-Oct 2013. And ideally, within 3hours of Boston but more than 1hour away.

I know that's asking alot, but if anyone knows of a place, we'd LOVE to hear from you! THANKS SO MUCH!

There's a lot up here on the North Shore in MA. Are you also open to Estate Homes, or Mansions?

Wilowdale is one of my favorites. I wish I was having a bigger wedding, I'd have it there.

Thanks, we'll check those out! We're hoping that places are more than an hour away so that it's somewhat of a "destination wedding" with all of our friends really getting out of the city. And "rustic" has been the plan, but we're open to other ideas. Thanks for the suggestions!

Are you in the city? There's some out in western ma that would be more then an hour away. Depends on where you are. Also there's some cool places in southern NH. I would also look there if you're thinking of a little further away.

We are in the city. We've been researching places all over western Mass, NH, VT, and Maine. But all seem to charge a lot for the site rentals. And for food and drink (with tax and tip) the cheapest we've seen is $99, so I was hoping someone would know of a lesser-known privately owned barn that would let people bring in their own bartender, alcohol, and dinner caterer...

Yea rental sites are expensive. I had so many issues since I'm having a smaller wedding. they wanted 5k minimum for food, thats a lot of food for <50 people..lol

I know theres a few on the north shore that allow your own food and booze. If I come across it, I'll post the link.

Brooksby farm in Peabody has a barn you can rent called the Smith Barn. It is really cute! I know someone who was married there this September. You do have to arrange for catering and I believe the ceremony is actually across the street in a garden area, outside of course.

    Tiffany,

You may also want to check out Quonquont Farm in Whately, MA. I believe they have a page on this site. Their actual website doesn't give away a lot of info but you can find it here and on FB. They do charge a rental fee but there are lots of local caterers who will work with you on keeping within your budget and help you with the liquor license/bar fees.

    Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Unfortunately, alot of places (like Smith Barn and Camp Kiwanee) are already sold out for Saturday weddings next Summer and Fall, so the search continues. Since so many of our guests are from out of town, we're now hoping for a place that has lodging nearby the event in order to avoid shuttles. But it seems like shuttles might be inevitable? Hopefully visits this weekend to a few places in NH will help us figure this out more!

    Again, thanks so much!

You can try Bittersweet Farms, in westport, Ma. They are a restaurant that you can rent out. We didn't look at is as a wedding site (our guest list was wayyyy too long) but I have been there to eat, and its really nice

    www.bittersweetfarms.org

Also, Harrington Farm, in Princeton, MA is beautiful, but more on the expensive side if I remember correctly.

Finally, TJ Smith House, its not a barn, but an old style house in Bridgewater, Ma. Very nice, has its own chapel inside, so you can have the ceremony in a separate space on site, if that matters to you! Also, I don't think that it was very expensive, from what I remember.

hope that helps, keep us updated to what you find!

Hi Tiffany, I am too looking for something almost the exact criteria as you. I must have researched at least 20 venues and they all require you utilize their catering or use their "preferred caterers" which will run $130/head. Please let me know if you've found a place that will be under 15k for your guests and that has nearby accomodations for our of town guests. This is exactly what I'm looking for as well.

    Amy,

What we realized is that we couldn't have the wedding we wanted for under 15K, so we ended up raising our budget. It took us months to accept that we'd have to do that. We've decided on the Wentworth Inn up in Jackson, NH. We love it because it's country elegant and all of our guests can stay there. I'd recommend you look at it, but know that a summer wedding there will not be under $15K for 100 guests. Oh, and it's a tent reception on-site.

I'd also recommend that you look at a couple other places that seemed more affordable: Moody Mountain Farm (with a barn) and the Red Barn at Hampshire College. Friends of ours are getting married there, and it seems like a steal!

    Best of luck!
