Need help with Acrylic nails!

Brittny, on March 14, 2017 at 7:01 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

I finally did my nails for the first time ever by a nail salon! I've only ever used the glue and press on nails, otherwise I'd paint my own regular nails. I got the no chip acrylic and I'm starting to get used to it. I love how it looks! But how damaging is it to my natural nail? Is it worth it to continue "filling them in" if its cheaper than waiting to get them done for the wedding day? In other words do I let the acrylics grow out and get them removed until I get them done again for the wedding....or continue to get them filled in?

They are terrible for your nails. So is gel polish. Usually for acrylics you have to soak them off and that is super drying to the skin.. some pick the acrylics off the natural nail, and as you can imagine how that can end up...

I have gotten my nails done multiple times but RARELY do so.

My aunt has had acrylic nails for 20+ years... she loves them obviously. lol But I will be getting them done for my wedding.

It's very damaging. I only do two fill ins max and then take them off to let my nails grow back out.

Acrylic nails are notoriously bad for your natural nails.

They are horrible for your nails, also i only do 1 fill then have them removed and re-done.

If you have the finances to get a mani regularly, I'd just go a get a regular mani every week or at least every two and that'll help keep your nails strong. By doing this, you should be able to grow them to a nice length before your wedding. I've always preferred natural long over acrylic.

I agree with the other posters. As much as I love how they look, they are terrible for your natural nails.

    p.s. your ring is beautiful!

    Damaging.

I had acrylics for years, and had them FINALLY removed for good in the end of January. They're still recovering. They unhealthy, drilled down bit is FINALLY towards the quick, so my nails should be back to normal very soon.

Since it's March, I'd just keep refilling until your wedding, then take them off.

How are your natural nails? By this I mean are they thin and break or can you grow them out to a nice length without isdue. I ask because I used to do acrylics until it thinned out my own nail to the point it hurt. Now I do a dip nail powder on my natural nail. It is so much better than acrylic or gel nail. It helps to protect your natural nail and makes them thicker to prevent breaking. Mine break a lot when I get them long. It's a little more expensive to do, but I love it.

Agree with other comments. However I'm too lazy/can never grow out my natural nails so I get acrylics.

I would probably keep them until the wedding at least.

I try not to get more than 3 fills per set of acrylic. With your wedding in June I suggest not keeping that same set until your wedding. You should soak them off and get a get manicure until it's time for your wedding set.

Continue to get them filled if that is in you budget. Acrylic causes a lot of damage to your nails and it sucks. But to take them off and do again will just be harder on them.

I go through phases of acrylic, I currently have them because I'm a habitual nail biter when I am stressed or anxiety is wreaking havoc, and they were too short and I'm going on vacation at the end of the week. I'll probably keep them on for about 2-3 months then take them off.

For now, go with fill-ins, and the week of your wedding, get a new set. Almost every girl I know had acrylics for their wedding. The shape is perfect, maybe you can have them cut them to a little bit past your real nail growth for a more natural look.

    Btw--- stunning ring

I used to have acrylic nails up until five years ago (7 years straight). The best decision I ever made was to stop getting them done and grow out my natural nails.

I don't recommend them. They are very damaging to your natural nails.

I would take them off and then get a new set before the wedding. For anyone who wants to have natural nails try taking a prenatal vitamin. I did acrylics for years and it was so damaging that sometimes we nails would ache. I recently just did a trial with gel polish and now that it's finally off my nails are crap again. They won't grow and just keep breaking and flaking. I plan on leaving them and taking the prenatals for a bit then getting them done right before my wedding

I had acrylic for almost 10 years. My nails won't hold polish, even gel chips. I'm now doing gel nails instead. Only fill them in every 3 weeks and not as damaging.

I had acrylic nails done once (years ago)... I hated them. The moment I was able to get them off I did. Painful! So I painted them myself for years. About a year ago I went to the spa and did a Shellac Manicure. It last for about 3 weeks and my nails are still as healthy. I finally get to maintain some length!

I'm a retired nail tech and what I can tell you for absolute fact. No reputable product is designed to damage your nails. If you have suffered damage from acrylics I can tell you what happened. The number 1 cause of damage is the removal. I've literally seen tons of case where clients have literally peeled or pried them off. Or they've gone to an unlicensed tech and had them filed off and they go to far taking off precious layers of nails. Also unlicensed shops and techs are still known to use MMA based products because they are harder and last longer. MMA has been banned in the US since the 70's because it is actually very harmful and damaging to nail. 90% of cases of damage I've seen are 100% preventable. I wear acrylic overlays on my natural nails and have never had an issue. Protect yourself by making sure you are receiving services from a licensed tech. When you walk in to a salon there should be a license visible for each and every person working. If you don't see it you have the right to ask for it. If they can't produce it, leave. Or prepare to have damaged nails. Acrylics are completely safe if properly done.

I've been getting acrylic on my natural nails for over a decade now and my nails aren't damaged but they can be damaging. I find adding fake nails and adding acrylic more damaging than having an overlay (adding acrylic to your natural nails). You can also request to have a very thin layer of acrylic. Have you thought about doing nexgen (dipping powder) or gel manicures?
