Need Help: Champagne Choice

rlg510, on March 9, 2011 at 3:46 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

I have no clue about champagne. My venue offers 4 options at a variety of prices. I know that some are sparkling wines and only one is "real champagne" from grapes grown in the proper region of France. But, other than price, I don't know which one to pick. Here are the choices. Please recommend one of them to me.

Andre Champagne $12.00

Ballatore Spumante $14.00

Korbell Brut $18.00

Martini & Rossi Asti $19.00

Thanks a bunch!

I'm a sucker for Korbell! if they offered Veuve Cliquot... i'd go for that (my fav). ask if they can get it... no harm. our venue got coke for my dad for the wedding & they do NOT do business with coke (long story).

Spumantes tend to be sweeter so I personally like those better...

I would definitely check with them to see if they can get a champagne that you want. it shouldnt be an issue - they may just have to charge an additional fee to bring in something else. definitely look into the veuve clicquot - the yellow label non-vintage is quite good, and reasonable.... as is their rose champagne if you want to do pink!! Smiley surprise) you may also want to price out some henriot - it can be a bit harder to find, but is really good and also well priced.

out of those listed here - i would go with the korbell.

    goooood luck!! Smiley surprise)

I'm an Asti, but don't care for Martini and Rossi. That's also WAY expensive for it! You can buy it for $7/bottle at a liquor store. I know they want to make a profit, but that's a bit high.

I'd go with the Spumante. They tend to be sweeter.

Can you get the venue to do champagne tastings?

Buy two or three different brands and get together with your parents. You should have a nice dinner and a "tasting" and choose your brand. The above are all okay, but I have a better suggestion, if you could get it:

Nicolas Feuillatte Brut NV (* Best Champagne bargain): Very clean, light-to-medium style, from a relative newcomer. $26.99

The Korbel is the best of those four. As mentioned, the Ballatore and the Martini and Rossi will be sweet. Andre is horrid...cheap, $3 bottom shelf grocery store wine.

To be honest, NONE of these are Champagne, they are Sparkling wines. The only real Champagne comes from the Champagne region of France, as they tend to start around $35 retail and work their way up to several hundred dollars. None of the wines on your list are from France. Three are California, one is from Italy.

For those posting about Feuillatte, it is really good! There upper end, Palmes d'Or is stunning, but expensive! Around $300 wholesale!!! I used to represent them, so I was able to drink it from time to time. Not now, if I have to buy it. LOL!!!

To address prices. Prices will ALWAYS be higher at a venue, through a caterer or a restaurant than you can find it at a retail store.

There is an "upcharge" to cover glassware, washing of glassware, servers, licencing fees for a liquor license and the big one, liquor liability insurance.

Venues can get other wines for you, no doubt about that. They work with wine distributors who have for more wines than appear on a list. So if you have a favorite, ask.

As far as Veuve at a venue, it will be spendy. It retails around $40 a bottle, so at a venue, you may be looking at closer to $60+ a bottle. A standard wine mark-up is usually 2.5 times the wholesale price.
