Need help ASAP on how to bustle this gown!

klp2010, on June 22, 2010 at 4:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

I've got an appt. at lunch tomorrow to start my bustle on pronovias megan.

The biggest issue I'm foreseeing is that the tulle is not connected to the satin underlay... Before I purchased the dress, I noticed it would be complicated to bustle, and the seamstress said they would do a french. Kind of started to tuck it under and I noticed the tulle still kind of dragged a lot....

This image is from AFTER she let it go so obviously it's not where it would be 100%

The problem is, the dress already has a lot of french bustling to it. The way the tulle is, i'm not sure french will be the "best" but I'm not sure if kind of tucking it up under a layer or something would worth either...

I'm TERRIFIED of the bustle! Any idea's on which bustle to go for?

Hhmmm..I don't see what other option you could have. You certainly can't do an over bustle with this dress....did you ask the seamstress to show you more than one option? I think you'll be fine when they fully pin it all up where it should be. And I agree with PP...GREAT dress!

I'm not sure if this will help at all or not...my dress is primarily lace and has been a pain to bustle as well. What we are doing with mine is tucking the main part of the dress underneath with loops that have been sewn in. But for the sides they are using (not really sure what the technical term for it is) one of the guns that stores use to put the clear price tags on things to hold it up. My seamstress is going to mark my dress on the underneath to show where to pin up and then we are connecting it with the price gun clear things. I think that something like this may work for yours as well because the toole may have some of the same consistency as the lace. Hope this helps!

I think the double french bustle is nice but the tulle may have to be cut? But then how would it fall if its not bustled? Not helpful I know just trying to think...

Im thinking that your only option will be the french bustle... maybe they can tack the tull better so that when the parts are bustled up, they wont drag as much.

im sure they can figure it out... hopefully it isnt their first.

    good luck & gorgeous dress!

Your seamstress will most likely bustle all the tulle so only a little of it shows beneath the fabric layer. She could also bustle it so that none of the tulle shows. I wouldn't worry too much - She may have just bustled the top portion to show you what it would look like thinking she would pull up all the tulle so it wouldn't show. Tell her you are concerned and want to see the bustle pinned up exactly the way it will look when finished.

Your gown is breathtaking - I would love to bustle it...Once a bridal seamstress always a bridal seamstress...

Don't worry - the seamstress with be able to do the bustle so the tulle doesn't drag. That's one of the good things about going with the store/designer's seamstress, they've done it a million times before, and they're invested in it looking as good as possible. You're golden!

I'm sorry, I'm not going to be any help either, as I just learned what a bustle even is when I bought my dress. But your dress is gorgeous!

So, I met with the seamstress and it seems that a french really is the only option. They pinned it up and there isn't really a way to pull it up AND get all the tulle up off the ground... i.e. it would drag and get stepped on and the bustle could break....

So.... we're trimming down the tulle. I'm starting to get cold feet about it though.... I don't really think I have a choice but I'm starting to worry it may take some of the effect away from the gown?

When it IS all tucked up, I feel like it looks a little goofy.... like it's a sleek from the front all the way down but from the side around knee to mid-thigh it's like KA-POOF! Like it shoots out from my knee... :-( You can kind of see what I'm talking about in the bottom image. Like, it's form fitting down past my behind and then.... BAM... it sticks straight out....

Did she bustle the tulle layer separately? It's so difficult to tell without actually seeing the construction of the dress.

    I don't think it looks goofy - it's such a beautiful dress.

You mentioned that the tulle layer was not connected to the satin under layers. That gown, judging from the picture, needs 2 separate bustles. One for the over satin skirt with french bustle layers and then one for the underskirt tulle/lining layers. Have the seamstress bustle the tulle and lining together with an over bustle, so those layers up off the ground. The way the overskirt is bustled with a french bustle looks good. Sometimes you have to use 2 different bustle styles to accomplish what you want.

I am afraid that if she cuts that tulle, when the train is down, the tulle will not cover the satin lining. The manufacturer leaves the excess over hang to make sure that the satin doesn't creep out from under the tulle.

@dbrown - that's what I was thinking - I didn't see the comment about the layers not being connected.

I agree - two separate bustles.
