Name change: Two middle names?

E + K, on April 14, 2014 at 10:01 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

So, I've been going back and forth for ages about how to change my name. Traditionally, the women in my family drop our middle and move maiden to middle and take new (so it is First Maiden NewLast). My issue with that is that I already have my mom's maiden as my middle (it was my given middle name), and I love it. I am way closer to that side of the family, plus that side is mostly women and the name is dying out on that side (I am the only one from my grandparent's branch to carry it into my generation). I am not as close to my dad's side (my current last), but it is my last name. I don't want to hyphenate my last because it will be too long (my current is 7 letter and FH's is 10). I also am set on taking FH's name.

So, basically that leaves me with the middle name situation. I see it as 3 choices.

    1. First CurrentMiddle NewLast (just drop my current last altogether)

    2. First Maiden NewLast (drop my mom's family name)

    3. First CurrentMiddle-Maiden NewLast (both as middle names)

I kind of like the idea of #3 (hypenated or not) but Im not sure about having 2 middle names. Can you even do that? Am I overthinking this? Thoughts?

I think it is fine to have two middle names. I've known people who have two middle names.

I have 2. I go by my middle name and have my entire life, but getting rid of it was going to be a huge hassle so I'm legally "first name middle name (which I go by) maiden name new last name". It looks a little long on my driver's license but I just monogram everything middle-maiden-last since I don't use my first, haha!

I had two middle names with my first marriage. It was fine, though there were some instances where I was forced to choose one or the other because certain systems couldn't handle two middle names (such as applying for certain credit cards and such, or the standardized email addresses at the company I work for). But yes, you can legally take two middle names!

My sister kept her middle name, moved her maiden to the middle, and took her husband's name. It is a little long, but that way she could keep all the names that had meaning to her. So when she signs things, she does it First MM Last (The MM being the first letters of each of her middle names) It is absolutely something you can do, and if it would make you happy to keep all of your names, do it! Smiley smile

I thought about keeping my middle name (I loved it) and having two middle names (maiden as well) but when I wrote it on paper, I didn't like how it looked. So, I ended up dropping my middle name. I loved it, but I had no family ties to it. If it was really meaningful, I would have kept it.

Ok, thanks. I am leaning toward keeping both, but I was wondering how much of a hassle it would be. I appreciate the input! My name will be kind of long, but luckily my first and current middle aren't too long, so I don't think it will be so bad.

Just as a heads up-- some states won't recognize this as a name change due to marriage, but rather as a legal name change, which means you may need to pay a fee to do it this way.

I asked a similar question last week and got a lot of different feedback. I think I'm ultimately going to with First Middle NewLast.

I like choice #1 - First CurrentMiddle NewLast

It sounds like your current middle name means more to you than your maiden name, so I'd definitely keep it.

@Kimberly N - Thanks, I must have missed that, but I just went and read it.

Also, hi from over the bay (I'm in St Pete)

I'm going to have two middle names. The question is how to develop your signature with all those names lol

I am also having the same dilemma. At first I was so confident I wanted to hyphenate my last name, but then after hearing that it's a pain in the butt and really long I've been trying to figure out how I want to change my middle name. I still don't know what to do!

But I think you should definitely keep your current last name - either option 1 or 3. Sounds like it has much more meaning to you.

I have two middle names. When I was adopted they moved my birth last name to be my second middle name and I took my adoptive parent's last name. I dislike it. I don't care what the paper says! *I'm a rebel* Lol ;-P

If you have more ties to your mothers side, I say option 1.
