Name Change Help Needed

Rebecca, on June 8, 2020 at 11:56 AM Posted in Married Life 0 7

Help please!!! I got married back in March right when the shut downs started. I received the certified copy of my marriage certificate, and would like to change my last time. I have a honeymoon scheduled in September, which we are still hoping to take, and my flights have my new last name on them. The problem is that currently all of the social security offices are closed... so I don't know how to go about changing my last name. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do? I am starting to panic that my name won't be changed in time, as I imagine even if the social security office does open soon that it will still take forever to complete the name change process and get my new IDs.

You can apply for a new social security card through the mail. There are instructions on the SSA website.

You can mail in your paperwork. Go to the SS website, download the paperwork, and follow the mail in instructions. Hopefully your DMV's are open so you can get a new ID. Our DMV's in my state are not open and there is no way to get a new ID without physically going to a DMV, unfortunately.

I got married in March as well and recently changed my name. Like the others said, you can mail in everything to the SS office in your city and get a new card. They'll mail all your original documents back to you. I got my documents and my new card in a little over a week. Our DMV's also had just opened up so I was able to go and get my new driver's license as well.

Call SSA, they are working remotely.

Melanie, what documents did you need to send? I am a little nervous about doing it via mail, since everything I have ready says you can't send copies but need to send the actual documents or ID

SSA told me to file the form SS-5 and since I had been newly married all I had to send in was our marriage license. It has to be the original cuz they need the seal but I got mine back a week after I sent it in so it was quick. I'm still waiting for the dmv to open so I can do my license

All I needed was my original marriage certificate. I called the local office and ask and he told me everything I would need to send in. My marriage certificate had my date of birth on it so I didn't have to send in my ID. I'm in TN though so I'm not sure it's like that everywhere. But they do have to be originals, not copies. I was a little worried about sending everything in the mail but he reassured me that they would send everything back so I went ahead. I didn't want to wait until they opened to change my name, cause who knows when that will be. It turned out to be super easy and quick though.
