Name Change After Marriage - New York

Marissa, on October 15, 2019 at 9:13 PM Posted in New York Planning 0 2
I am moving to NY, and want to get everything done at once (name change and address change). Does anyone know if you can change your name in NY prior to getting a new social security card? Just asking for time frame purposes.

    Hey there, Marissa.

Social Security office is typically the first place to visit, as many other government offices won’t recognize your name change until you’ve updated it on your Social Security card.

It may be best to check with local government offices in the state in case they handle things differently and you may be able to do so Smiley smile

Thank you, I went to the DMV first and was able to do it prior to SS. You need to provide your marriage certificate. I was asking because SS offices do not stay open late for people who work Monday thru Friday. So at least you can get one step done by changing your name at a DMV which sometimes stays open later during the week. Thanks again for your help!
