This is probably gross to a lot of people. I have a horrible habit of biting my nails but my major problem is picking my cuticles ( I know its really gross) I do it out of boredom and anxiety.. Doe's anyone one have any suggestions on how to stop? I've tried the painting my nails thing but that just...

I used Jamberry nail wraps to break my habit. I couldn't chew through the vinyl wrap and it drove me crazy when they'd fray so I stopped bitign them after a few days.

Jamberry worked for the nail biting but not the skin biting around them.

@christine I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who bites their skin. I still do that if my nails get cut/filed too short. FH thinks it's weird.

Sprinkle cayenne pepper on the tips of your fingers (I'm being totally serious). Just don't put your finger in your eye!

"Biting my nails as I open wedding wire and notice your post, coincedence?" Although I have gotten a lot better and I notice that as long as my nails are painted/done I don't. Polish is good for a day on me so I use Jamberry. I swear by them! Most of the time I will put them on just to get over the habit, if my nails are bare I have no chance!

The painting/Jamberry might now work for the gentleman though!

My Mom bit her nails and cuticles to the nub my whole 40 years. Then, one day 11 years ago she decided she wouldonly bite nine, and grow out her pinky. Then 8, and grow out her ring finger and so on. I remember it took her forever to give up that last pinky fingernail on her left hand. It gave her anxiety to stop the last one too, but she did it. Her fingernails are so damaged still from years of biting them - but they look alot better than when she bit them almost up to her cuticles. Oh and now she does this annoying thing where she drums her fingernails on the dining room table when we are just sitting there.....oh well! :-)

I am a cuticle biter and my thumb has always been really bad- even for some of my wedding pics i had to hide it bc i chewed it raw the night before- i was a little nervous. What has helped me is to keep moisturizing!! Keep a little bottle with you and every time you get the urge- re-apply. If you are able to pick the skin it means your hands are dry. Also, getting just regular manicures helped bc they kept my cuticles short (you don't need to get them polished)

I used to bite my nails, not too short, just to cut them right. It was my way to clip them, really.

Last year I decided to get gel extensions. I did it for 5 months, and then stopped. The habit went away, and now I have naturally long nails.

I also use Nailitiques (formula 2) and it is AMAZING. It makes my nails stronger, plus it adds a shiny coat (you put it directly on your nail and over your polish as well. It soaks in.).

Same here. I hated it so much because i always though manicures looked ugly on me because of my short nails. I bought a nail polish hardner and to make it grow. i put it infront of me at my job at my desk. every hour or so maybe 3 hours i put it on to make my nails grow. i do this every day and they have grown and because its infront of me i stopped buying my nails. now they grow and i get to get manicures!

Sorry I disappeared no WW at work for me..

I've been using the rubber band so far to keep my hands busy and I'm going to get some cuticle oil or lotion to help keep them from drying out, I work with clothes so they dry out very fast!

I'm really bad about picking my cuticles. I try to keep them soft with the small metal pod of Nivea creme or Burt' Bees Lemon Butter. Obviously if they're soft there is less to pick at...

I have tried the Hoof 1 over and over again, and i get so mad at it when i'm eating popcorn because i also love eating food with my hands, I just couldn't do it. I want to try that burts bees stuff that was mentioned. i think i was better when i painted my nails, but then i pick them and it starts over. this is the hoof 1 in case anyone wants to know what it looks like.

I'm like you so these ideas are swell. But then again anytime I have any length to my nails I clip them off too, idk why. They're so ugly and short!

I used to be realllly bad with biting my nails. One year I gave it up for lent. How silly right? It only takes 21 days to get over a bad habit. Somehow it worked. I used to use the bad tasting nail polish stuff and that didn't help me either, so I feel the pain on that one.

HOWEVER, I picked up a different bad habit after that. I started picking at the dead skin on my lips. It's when I'm bored that it happens. There are days when my lips look terrible. I did find out that picking at skin like the lips, is a sign of anxiety. I have other little things that fit in with GAD, so every week I tell myself that this one will be better and I won't put my hands to my lips.
