My wedding cake was not what i asked for, what can i do?

Lauren, on May 8, 2022 at 12:27 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

I need to let the lady who did our wedding cake know I am very unhappy with what she delivered. I paid $500 for this cake and the materials used on it were all from the dollar tree (being a crafter I recognized them), the icing was cracked in spots, and thin in others, there was frosting covering jewels, the flowers she used were what I had on site. Im trying to figure out a professional way to let her know how unhappy I am about it. Theres nothing in our contract about satisfaction

I'm assuming the last picture was your inspiration. Were you not wanting fondant like in the inspiration pic? I agree the cake you got doesn't look like what you wanted and you can certainly reach out to the baker about it. I don't know if they'd offer a refund or not though just based on the way the cake looked. What were their reviews like? Do they do weddings a lot? It doesn't look very professionally done. I would just say "I was very disappointed with the cake we received for our wedding on x date. Y and Z are why I'm disappointed." And then leave a review everywhere you can think of.

We never talked about not wanting fondant. It just looks very cheaply done. They came recommended to us by our wedding planner (who also agrees with me and said she is very disappointed in the cake and will no longer be referring to them). We did a consult with her and saw her work, what she showed us all looked really good

Try and message her and tell her that you're dissatisfied with the cake and that it doesn't look like your inspiration that you provided her. I would request a partially refund. If she declines you can leave negative reviews online. Since there was nothing in the paperwork on what would happen if you were dissatisfied and you and your guests ate the cake then there's nothing legally you can do.

Reach out via email so you have a paper trail. Let her know that the cake was not what you wanted and you would like at least a partial refund. No information in the contract means neither you nor her would be protected in a court of law. Write honest reviews on every platform: Google, Yelp, etc

While my cake was a different style, I was going for the water color look, my baker also didn’t do what I asked her to do. I’ve decided to just let it go because it tasted good and my husband and I are the only ones that knew what it was supposed to look like. I noted it in the review I left for her, but didn’t address it elsewhere.

I had the same problem and wasn’t happy with my cake. When I called to let them know they were very nice and offered me a pretty good size refund for some of my cake. Most companies would rather have the opportunity to fix than have someone leave a bad review, so give them a call. Good luck.

I'd definitely reach out to the baker to see if they'd give you a partial refund. A good chunk of the fee is for design, so while even though the cake was eaten, there would still be something to recover based on the design elements. That being said, depending on what state you're in, you're probably looking at small claims court if you wanted a legal avenue to recover, and it probably wouldn't be worth the cost of an attorney, so unless you're willing to represent yourself, it may be best to just let it go and leave reviews.

This is definitely true. I should not that my review wasn’t negative because the cake tasted awesome. However, what I noted is that we wanted a whimsical/water color cake design and her cake had a much more structured/formal design. So if anyone wanted a bohemian / whimsical cake then she may not be the best choice. I had that concern with using her from the start, but used her because she was included with the venue.

100% tell them! It looks super rushed but it isn’t terrible.

Yeah, I would definitely let the baker know you were not satisfied. Sorry, but that cake does not look like it should be $500. It looks like something a beginner baker would do, or something you’d find at the store. Definitely tell the baker, these cakes are not cheap by any means.
