My Venue Went Bankrupt This Week! My Wedding Was Supposed to Be on 8/31/13. WOW!

mrsaj2b, on August 29, 2013 at 12:08 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

OMG! I heard today from my wedding planner and event designer that the venue I had a contract with declared bankruptcy this week and that all weddings Sept 1st and after are cancelled.

My wedding was planned for this Saturday, 8/31 but I had to postpone. Had things gone as planned my wedding would have been the last one they had I guess. Can you imagine what a hot mess of an event that might have been? I can imagine none of the staff would have given a hoot about my event. Furthermore, who knows if anyone would have been there to let us in. I hate the reason for my postponement but I am thankful not to have to be dealing with a bankrupt venue.

I know that there is bride with a 9/1 wedding there. She just found out this week she has no wedding venue. I feel so sorry for her and all the other couples with weddings coming up soon who booked there. This is a awful!

Lesson: Do your homework on your venue ladies before booking and paying the fee!

How sad, I don't know what I would do if my venue went bankrupt!

Sometimes bad things(your postponement, for example), happen to good people...but for a VERY GOOD reason!!!

Call it fate! Bc as you said, instead of going out in high fashion, they could've said Eff it and left you in the dust, money and all! And I'm not POSITIVE, but I believe once bankruptcy is declared with a business, all lawsuits are compiled in, and forgiven with little to no restitution. Or at least, YEARS are given to pay it back.

At this point, hate the postponement, but love the situation. Bc you'd be out money a month before, and if the building is prematurely seized, oh holy hell Batman!

Good luck with your new venue search, that is, if you haven't already gotten one yet!

Holy ship that's horrible. I'm so glad you postponed. I feel bad for all those other ladies that were booked. I have no clue what I would do if that were me. Yikes.

Believe me, this happens. It's happening to a gorgeous garden venue in our area. Most of the time, venues don't announce this stuff (impending foreclosure), but someone got a hold of the information and it was published in the newspaper. One of our brides was scheduled to be married there in April, 2014. The best she could get was a new date of November, 2013. The venue is putting on a good face (they claim to be waiting on a loan modification), but there is absolutely no guarantee that the property can be saved.

A bankruptcy is different than foreclosure, but the chances of a couple getting deposits/full payments back are slim to none. Brides/Grooms have to wait in line behind the serious creditors who are waiting for a portion of the millions they're owed.

Buy wedding insurance. It can save you should something like this happen.

@The Centerpiece Flowers - This definitely is a good reason to buy wedding insurance.

Yes ladies given this issue my postponenment is a blessing in disguise. I would be so beside myself this week and probably would have popped a blood vessel.

There was a reason for the postponement, obviously!

That is horrible for the 9/01 bride. Gives me chills thinking about how she is probably feeling right now. It doesn’t even seem right.

This happened to a HUGE venue near me that a lot of brides used and it wasn't cheap either. Anyways, Luckily it hit the news (which I advice) and ALL the brides were taken care of by other venues that donated services.

The problem is that no amount of research is going to let you know if a place is going to go under. The only real way to be safe is to buy wedding insurance, even if it is only specifically for that purpose. The cost is so minimal compared to the benefits.

And just for the record, bankrupcy is terrible for everyone; venues included. No one with a long standing business wants it to end this way.

Wow! I saw a story similar to this on the news and got wedding insurance immediately. We didn't neet it, but would have been grateful for the coverage if we had needed it.
